This is the longnose butterflyfish also known as lau-wiliwili-nukunuku‘oi‘oi in Hawaiian, a common sight in the coral reefs around the islands. With its striking yellow and black stripes and long snout, this fish is a true beauty. Did you know that the longnose butterflyfish feeds on coral polyps and other invertebrates? The Hawaiian Monk seal is one of the rarest creatures we can hope to see in the warm waters of Hawaii. Known as "Ilio holo I ka uaua" which translates to Dog that runs on rough waters, are one of the most endangered species in the world. Wildlife Wednesday
This is one of the most colorful fish on the reef and one of the most essential. The Hawaiian Parrotfish also known as Uhu are common along our reef systems.
Parrotfish use their beak-like mouths to scrape off algae that grow on coral helping keep them healthy. Their presence on a reef means that our reef is going to be a more vibrant place.

Introducing one of the largest marine mammals that visit the Hawaiian waters, The Humpback whale, Kohola in Hawaiian.
In the winter months between December and March, more than 10,000 humpback whales migrate south to the Hawaiian Island chain. They come to breed, birth, and build stronger family bonds.
This migration of over 6,000 miles is one of the longest by any mammal and takes them 6-8 weeks on continuous swimming.

Wildlife Wednesday!
This week we are featuring the Hawaiian State Fish!
The humuhumunukunukuapua'a or Reef Triggerfish is a colorful resident of the reef and another part of our healthy ecosystem.
The translation of humuhumunukunukuapua'a means "Tiggerfish with snout like fish".
They can be seen regularly moving rocks and sand around the bottom of the reef looking for food.

🐢🐢 Wildlife Wednesday 🐢🐢
One of our favorite underwater friends we get to see is the Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle or Honu.
We are lucky to have a very healthy population of Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles along the coast of Oahu. One of our favorite snorkel spots, Turtle Canyon, is home to dozens of these lovely green turtles.
Turtles cannot clean their own shells so they visit cleaning stations like Turtle Canyon to have other reef fish eat the algae and parasites that grow on their shells.
