As we gather with loved ones during this season of Thanksgiving, let us also reflect on the many ways we can give back to the ‘āina, to our communities, and to one another. This is a time to celebrate not only the connections we have nurtured but also the possibilities that lie ahead when we work together with purpose.

Mahalo nui loa for your commitment, passion, and aloha.

Happy Thanksgiving from your HVCB ʻohana to yours.💙

World Tourism Day 2024: Fostering Peace Through Connection 🤝

Today in Hawaiʻi, we are reminded that aloha and kuleana invite us to share our moʻolelo (stories), and landscapes with visitors from around the world, creating opportunities for meaningful exchanges and lifelong connections.

As we welcome mindful travelers with open hearts, we remember that tourism has the potential to be a force for peace—not just in Hawaiʻi, but everywhere. Together, we can build bridges, support reconciliation, and promote a future where tourism unites us all in the pursuit of more maluhia - more peace.

Let’s continue to mālama ʻāina, mālama each other, and mālama the world. 🌎💙

We had the pleasure of supporting and celebrating the work of Nā K**a Kai at their 13th annual Paʻakai Awards at The Royal Hawaiian. Through their mission to empower keiki by connecting them with the kai and ʻāina, Nā K**a Kai enables each child to nurture a deeper sense of aloha and kuleana for the natural environment and themselves.

Mahalo to Nā K**a Kai for building the next generation of ocean stewards and community leaders!

Mele (songs), oli (chants), and hula preserve the memories, stories, and values of our ancestors. Through their lyrics, metaphors, and melodies, we gain a unique perspective on Hawaiʻi's history. In honor of Hawaiian History Month, we reflect upon one of Hawaiʻi's most well-known mele, Kaulana Nā Pua. Written by Eleanor Prendergast in 1893 and published in 1895, this song serves as a patriotic protest against the U.S. annexation of Hawaiʻi. Also known as "Mele ʻAi Pōhaku," or the "rock-eating song," its lyrics express the sentiment that the native people would rather " eat rocks" than accept annexation. Today, this song represents cultural pride and resilience in the face of adversity.

This clip is taken from a powerful music video put together by Project KULEANA and Kamehameha Publishing in 2013.

Hauʻoli Lā Hānau e Queen Liliʻuokalani!

Queen Lili‘uokalani was the last monarch to sit on the Hawaiian Kingdom throne. She attempted to write a new constitution that would have restored the power of the monarchy and expand the right to vote. In response, she was overthrown by American merchants and missionary descendants in 1893 with assistance from U.S. Marines. Upon her death in 1917, she bequeathed her estate to be placed in a trust for the benefit of Native Hawaiian children. She is famous for writing the internationally recognized song, “Aloha ‘Oe,” and was an accomplished musician and composer like her siblings and many other Hawaiian ali‘i (chiefs/royalty). She wrote her autobiography, Hawai‘i’s Story, by Hawai‘i’s Queen during her house arrest. Her former home, Washington Place, is the residence of state governors and is now a museum.

The queen’s legacy carries the Hawaiian values of ʻonipaʻa - to remain steadfast, and aloha ʻāina - a deep love of land and fierce patriotism. It is her devout leadership and aloha that we celebrate on her birthday today.

September is Hawaiian History Month! For the past several years, community organizations have come together to host a series of virtual and in-person events that educate and celebrate the rich history of Hawaiʻi.

The festivities kick off with a commemoration of Queen Liliʻuokalani’s birthday on September 2nd. This year marks her 186th birthday. A free concert in her honor will be held at Kawaiahaʻo Church today, followed by a special memory walk tomorrow at ʻIolani Palace.

Join us throughout September as we reflect on our history and how the knowledge and wisdom of our kūpuna continue to inspire us today.

Event details can be found online at hawaiiponoi.info.

Kuhinia Maui, led by the communities of Lahaina and Kula with the support of the County of Maui, is a series of remembrance events marking one year since the devastating fires. These events are a collaborative effort, requiring many volunteers. You are welcome to kākoʻo (support) by being stewards of aloha to our community, sharing space at these events, offering a listening ear, or giving someone a hug where needed. Together, we can uplift each other, strengthening the bonds of our Maui ‘ohana.

REPOST FROM County of Maui: Crater Road will be closed for a week starting at 6 a.m. Saturday, July 27, as a safety precaution amid an active 574-acre Crater Road fire nearby, County of Maui officials announced on July 26.

Haleakalā National Park Summit District Access is closed including Hosmer Grove and Haleakalā Crater. Kīpahulu District is open as usual. For information on park access and hours, visit https://www.nps.gov/haleakala.

The road will remain closed through 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3.

The Crater Road fire in Upper Kula remains 80 percent contained.

After portions of Crater Road were closed since July 10 due to the fire, the road was reopened at noon July 24, 2024, before the latest closure.

Safety concerns raised after the road was reopened led to the reclosure, according to the County of Maui Department of Fire and Public Safety. The department anticipates that work done during the weeklong closure will allow for the road to be reopened.

For more information on the Crater Road fire, sign up for Maui Emergency Management Agency alerts at www.mauicounty.gov/MEMA and follow County of Maui and Maui Fire Department on Facebook and Instagram.
