Learn how to safely and respectfully engage with the community, preserve and protect the culture and environment, and make a positive impact to both you and the island with your visit. Oʻahu, known as "The Gathering Place" is the third largest of the Hawaiian Islands and home to Honolulu, the state capital. We hope that this page serves as a valuable resource in helping you learn about what our de

stination has to offer, as well as connecting you with others around the world who are just as passionate about the Hawaiian island of Oʻahu. Most of all, we want this to be about you and your connection with our island. We invite you to share, engage, and converse with us and the rest of the community! We have a few simple guidelines we humbly ask you to follow when engaging with the community. Here are some ideas on the types of content that would be appropriate to share on the Oʻahu page:
-Your fantastic Oʻahu photos, videos, and stories...we absolutely love what we've seen so far! Please keep in mind that we occasionally re-share some of these photos to our Timeline.
- Your favorite places to go and things to do when you're in Oʻahu. Residents, feel free to share your favorite local hangouts.
- Hawaiʻi-themed events that may be happening elsewhere around the world.
- Posts about your upcoming, current, or past vacation in Oʻahu.
- Questions and requests for advice from others for your Oʻahu vacation.
- Content and links to your favorite blogs and other websites relating to Oʻahu as a vacation destination. Content that would not be appropriate on the Oʻahu page include:
- Posts that are commercial in nature (e.g., advertisements)
- Spam.
- Politically-driven content such as posts about elected officials or prospective political candidates. This also includes content/links to any specific political cause or legislation, regardless of point of view.
- Content that does not show proper respect or consideration for others.
- Content that may be considered likely to offend or provoke others.
- Content that promotes anything illegal.
- Content that may violate others' privacy. Although we don't foresee this happening much, we do reserve the right to remove any posts or comments at any time, for any reason, in order to keep this page relevant to and appropriate for the community as a whole. Mahalo (Thank you) for considering these guidelines. We hope you find our Facebook content not only insightful...but fun! Welcome to the community. Aloha!

It’s Hawaiian monk seal pupping season in the Hawaiian Islands! Their Hawaiian name is Īlioholoikauaua or “dog that runs in rough water.”

These endangered marine mammals are a treasured part of Hawai‘i’s ecosystem, and we all play a role in keeping them safe. How you can help: Keep your distance, never touch or feed wildlife, and respect federal laws that protect marine mammals. Disturbing them can result in fines. By observing from afar, you help ensure their health and safety. Mahalo for your kōkua (help).

Hawai'i Marine Animal Response (HMAR) will provides education days at Waikīkī Aquarium a couple of times each month where residents and visitors can come, meet with a HMAR volunteer, and learn more about Hawaiian monk seals, sea turtles and seabirds if interested in engaging more.

Today (March 3rd) marks Hinamatsuri (also known as Doll’s Day or Girls’ Day), a Japanese tradition, honoring the health, happiness, and prosperity of young girls.

Local traditions include families displaying momo no hana (peach blossoms), hinaningyō (ornamental dolls) to ward off bad spirits, and enjoying hishi mochi.

While you're on O'ahu, be sure to try mochi as a topping on your shave ice—it adds a deliciously chewy and sweet twist to this classic Hawaiian treat! 🍧

How do you celebrate Girls' Day? 💕

Proper use of the Hawaiian language includes the use of the ‘okina (which represents a glottal stop–a consonant) and the kahakō (a macron used to indicate elongated vowels).

The ‘okina and kahakō distinguish many words, and without this orthography, word definitions change. For instance, ono (a fish) is different from ‘ono (delicious), and kau (to place) is
different from kāu (your).

Many of your favorite locations on Oʻahu have proper Hawaiian names and stories behind them. The beloved Tantalus Lookout, also known as the Puʻu ʻUalakaʻa State Park, translates to "rolling sweet potato hill." The name of this state park refers to a crop that was once grown there. Planters would use gravity to help bring in the harvest, allowing the tubers they dug up to roll down the slopes to packers below.

Now, it is a popular lookout that offers stunning panoramic views of the city and sea.

‘Ōlelo No‘eau 📖

Hawaiian language is very poetic, often utilizing comparisons to nature or natural phenomenons to poetically describe a person, event or feeling. Sometimes these sayings, or ‘ōlelo no‘eau, involve a place or historical event. One collection of such sayings is ‘Ōlelo No‘eau: Hawaiian Proverbs & Poetical Sayings, collected, translated and annotated by Mary Kawena Pukui. Sometimes, people will note a number when using these ‘ōlelo no‘eau—these reference numbers come from that book.
