Good info to know when visiting Sleeping Bears Dunes.

Orange you glad to see me?

Around the park, you might notice volunteers and staff wearing bright orange colored clothing. This is the Preventative Search and Rescue (PSAR) team. They wear these colors to be easily seen by visitors. The PSAR team can be found at places like the Dune Climb and Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive. They spend their time sharing safety tips with visitors. If you are around the park and see PSAR volunteers and rangers, don't be afraid to ask them for their advice. They give excellent fruit for thought.

These visitors were peely glad to meet this PSAR volunteer and hear tips and tricks to stay safe while visiting the park!

During the winter of 1870, at least 214 people perished in shipwrecks on the Great Lakes. From these tragedies came the U.S. Life-Saving Service. Sleeping Bear Point Life-Saving Station was built in 1901. It is now known today as the Maritime Museum located near Glen Haven. In 1931 it was moved to its present location due to shifting sand dunes making it difficult to launch boats.

The Museum is once again open to the public from 11am-5pm through early October. Stop by and talk to volunteers about the lives of the crew who lived at the station 24/7.

To learn more about the history of the Maritime Museum, visit our website: https://www.nps.gov/slbe/planyourvisit/maritimemusem.htm

The South Manitou Lighthouse will be re-opening on July 12th and will be open through Labor Day for daily tours! Climb all 117 steps and enjoy the beautiful view of the Manitou Passage from the top of the tower.

The South Manitou Island Lighthouse is a prominent landmark at Sleeping Bear Dunes and is visible from the mainland! The 100-foot lighthouse tower, active from 1871 to 1958, marked the only natural harbor with westward protection between here and Chicago. Ships stopped at the island to refuel with wood for their boilers. It also provided a safe and well-protected haven from storms.

Are you visiting South Manitou Island this summer?
