🕰️🎬 explores the rich and often sordid history of Hot Springs, Arkansas! In this episode of History Lives our host Chuck Dodson unravels the history of the historic Malco Theatre.

In the late 19th Century, Hot Springs had evolved to one of the greatest spa towns in the world. Visitors came from near and far to enjoy the mineral waters and the rich nightlife and entertainment. In 1910, the Princess Theatre opened in the location of the now Malco Theatre, bringing cinema, vaudeville, and other types of entertainment to downtown Hot Springs. In 1935, tragedy struck when the Princess Theatre went up in flames. Eleven years later from the ashes of the Princess Theatre came the Malco Theatre. Today the Malco Theatre, now home to The Maxwell Blade Theatre of Magic, continues to bring entertainment to the Spa City.

YEAH, BOYEEEEEE! ⏰🎤☘️ Hip-hop performer Flavor Flav will be the Official Parade Starter on March 17 for the First-Ever 22nd Annual World's Shortest St. Patrick's Day Parade in downtown Hot Springs, Arkansas!

“Flavor Flav is one of the most recognizable legends in entertainment, and in March he will bring his contagious energy to our big little parade,” Visit Hot Springs CEO Steve Arrison said Monday. “He’ll be the perfect person to fire the official starter’s pistol when our parade steps off on 98-foot Bridge Street.”

The Hall of Fame rapper, co-founder of the pioneering hip-hop group Public Enemy, is a musical prodigy who is proficient on 15 instruments. He first burst onto the scene in the late 1980s, where he emerged as a co-founder of Public Enemy. Possessing the most sampled voice in the history of hip-hop, Flavor Flav (along with his group) was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013 and received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 62nd Annual GRAMMY Awards in 2020.

In addition to his culture-shifting career in hip-hop, Flavor Flav made a foray into reality television, where his series, “Flavor of Love,” achieved 7.5 million viewers during its Season 2 finale and was the highest-rated non-sports programming that year, and highest rated show for VH1 all-time.

As he continues to perform with Public Enemy, including the 2023 GRAMMY Awards, Flavor Flav has expanded his talents to scripted television, feature films, narrative film, voice-over acting, podcaster, documentary production and book author.

The World’s Shortest St. Patrick’s Day Parade annually attracts upwards of 30,000 fans to downtown Hot Springs where a zany array of floats, marching bands, Irish Elvis impersonators, Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, wacky costumed groups and guest celebrities cover the 98-foot Bridge Street parade route on the World’s Shortest Street in Everyday Use.

🌊🚤 One of Hot Springs' three area lakes, Lake Ouachita, was featured in Vogue's 'The 17 Best Lakes in the US!' The largest lake in Arkansas and one of the cleanest and clearest lakes in the country, Lake Ouachita is an oasis waiting to be explored during your next getaway!

"Minimal shoreline development arguably makes Arkansas’s largest lake its best. Lake Ouachita is surrounded by 1.8 million acres of forest and visitors can enjoy open camping across 200-plus islands. While here, hop on a boat to explore the Geo Float Trail; a self-guided water trail that extends across 12 exploration areas

Where to Stay: The lake is less than 15 miles from Hot Springs National Park, so take advantage of that proximity and book a room at The Reserve at Hot Springs, a former private mansion and national heritage landmark."

🎣🚤 Hot Springs will host the Phoenix BFL All-American Championship bass fishing tournament on Lake Hamilton, May 29 – 31, 2025!

It will be the seventh time Hot Springs has been the host city for the Championship, the most recent time being in 2022.

“The Phoenix BFL All-American Championship will once again focus the attention of the bass fishing world on Hot Springs and the unrivaled fishing opportunities that we have here in America’s First Resort,” Visit Hot Springs CEO Steve Arrison said. “The Phoenix BFL All-American is one of the most prestigious and longest-running championships in bass fishing. It features the best weekend anglers in America competing for a top award of $100,000 in the boater division and $50,000 in the co-angler division.”

“The tournament will be covered by independent media outlets from coast to coast along with MLF’s own television coverage,” Arrison said. “Daily coverage of the All-American is provided on majorleaguefishing.com with an in-depth recap in Bass Fishing magazine. The event also will have a one-hour television special in 2025 on the CBS Sports Network.

“The last Championship we hosted was in 2022, and we can’t wait to get these world-class bass anglers back to Hot Springs,” he said. “Our city knows how to show competitors a great time on Lake Hamilton and a great time in their off-the-lake hours too.”

To qualify for the Phoenix BFL All-American Championship, the anglers competed in a series of four one-day qualifying events and a two-day super tournament before ultimately finishing in the top six in a three-day regional championship. The 49 boaters and 49 co-anglers competing in the All-American are the best of more than 25,000 participants nationwide.

🍽️🛎️🛁 Where to eat, where to stay, and what to do. With so many options in Hot Springs, it can be hard to choose! Luckily The Cottage Journal featured an incredible lineup to help plan your trip, "Uncover a Hidden Gem in Hot Springs, Arkansas!"

"The most difficult decision any visitor to Hot Springs will face is where to eat, as the options are abundant. For breakfast, grab a stack of fresh pancakes and local-made sausage at The Pancake Shop (family-owned and -operated since 1940), savor a cup of organic coffee at Kollective Coffee+Tea, or enjoy the many creative dishes at Best Cafe (including Crème Brûlée French Toast that’s to die for).

You can find casual lunch fare at Stubby's BBQ—along with house-made sauce that’s worth taking home—or at Superior Bathhouse Brewery, the world’s first brewery to utilize thermal springs water as a main ingredient in their beers and root beers. A laid-back (but still high-quality) dinner awaits at SQZBX Brewery & Pizza Joint, a piano shop turned pizza parlor that offers one-of-a-kind pies and a friendly atmosphere, but J&S Italian Villa is the place to go if you’re ready for an evening filled with high-end, unforgettable fare." - The Cottage Journal

💰🐟 The catfish is out of the bag! Big Al, the $20,000 fish in the 2024 $110,000 Hot Springs Fishing Challenge, is a CATFISH located in LAKE HAMILTON!

There’s still time to catch Big Al and the 58 other prize fish on Lake Hamilton and Lake Catherine, worth $500 to 10,000 each. The challenge ends this Wednesday, July 31 at 5 p.m.

“We’d like to see someone bring in Big Al before the challenge ends next week. He’s a catfish lurking somewhere in Lake Hamilton, so anglers still have a chance to win some big money. “In addition to Al, we still have one fish worth $10,000, three worth $5,000, 35 remaining worth $1,000 and 19 worth $500.”

Arrison said the tagged fish are largemouth bass, bluegill, redear sunfish and channel catfish. ☎️ Each prize fish has a distinctive red tag, and those who catch them are reminded not to remove the tag and to call the Visit Hot Springs Fish Phone at the phone number on the tag.

America’s First Resort

Hot Springs, Arkansas, gets its name from the naturally thermal spring waters found here. Flowing out of the ground at an average temperature of 143 °F, the hot springs produce almost one million gallons of water each day.

It’s hard to tell exactly how long people have been visiting the springs. Native Americans called this area “the Valley of the V***rs,” and it was said to have been a neutral territory where all tribes could enjoy its healing waters in peace. Spanish and French settlers claimed the area in the mid-1500s. In fact, famous explorer Hernando de Soto was the first European to visit Hot Springs in 1541.

The hot springs were such a coveted natural wonder that in 1832, President Andrew Jackson designed Hot Springs as the first federal reservation. Hot Springs Reservation was essentially America’s first national park, predating Yellowstone National Park by 40 years.

In just a decade, the area changed from a rough frontier town to an elegant spa city centered on a row of attractive Victorian-style bathhouses, the last ones completed in 1888. When Congress established the National Park Service, Hot Springs Reservation became Hot Springs National Park in 1921.
