Botswana and the Okavango Delta are home to a great population of crocodiles. They can be found in the lakes, rivers and swaps throughout Botswana. When they aren't stalking prey, they live in a maze of channels and caves under the papyrus beds. This is where they bring their prey for a feast and take shelter. Their average lifespan can range from 60 to 100 years 🤯

Birds of Prey 💥

✨ Pelicans in the Okavango Delta are primarily the Great White Pelican and the Pink-backed Pelican. They are well adapted to the delta’s water-rich environment, using their large, pouched bills to scoop up fish, frogs, and other aquatic creatures.

✨ During the breeding season, which typically occurs in the dry months from May to October, pelicans form large colonies on islands or isolated areas within the delta. They build their nests out of sticks and reeds, often in trees or on the ground, and lay clutches of 1-3 eggs. Both parents take turns incubating the eggs and caring for the chicks once they hatch.

✨ Pelicans are also known for their cooperative hunting behavior. They often work together in groups to corral fish into shallow waters, making it easier for them to catch their prey. This synchronized fishing technique is a remarkable sight to witness in the delta’s labyrinth of waterways.

✨ Overall, pelicans are not only iconic residents of the Okavango Delta but also important contributors to its ecological balance, making them a fascinating subject for wildlife enthusiasts and conservation efforts alike.

Story time! 🐆

While we were out on a game drive with one of our guests, we realized we saw something in the road ahead of us.

As we approached closer, we realized we stumbled across this beautiful leopard.

A master of disguise, this leopard was in fact using the incline of the road as a cover. A cover for what, you say?

As we look to our left, we noticed a massive herd of impala. As soon as our vehicle came to a stop, the leopard pounced on one of the impala.

Clearly an experienced hunter, the leopard grabbed onto its lunch and made a quick escape with the carcass up a tree.

We drove off, leaving the leopard to enjoy its delicious victory in peace, and with a story that you’d have to be here to believe it.

You never know what you’re going to stumble across on Safari!

Happy World Hippo Day! 🌍 🦛

The Hippo is one of the Delta’s most iconic characters.

When the Delta floods, it increases areas of deeper water in which they can shelter. When the floodwaters begin the recede, it creates near-perfect conditions for fresh new greens to grow for them to feed on. Nature can be so epic like that sometimes. 🌳

Social, but loyal, you’ll often find these hubba bubbas in small family groups, which are called pods.

Here’s your fun fact of the day: the word “Hippopotamus” has Greek origins, meaning “river horse”. Hippos are known to be the third largest land mammal on Earth, clocking in, on average, over 3 tons 🤯. Their super thick skin alone can weigh up to 1 ton.

And let’s not horse around either, these guys aren’t the friendliest. But nonetheless, they are magnificent and wonderful beasts that we’re incredibly lucky to share the Delta with

Did you ever think you’d run into the mob on your safari vacation? Meerkats in the Delta are highly social animals, living in groups, called a “mob”, of up to 30 individuals. Mobs have a hierarchical structure, with an alpha pair leading the group and other members taking on various roles such as babysitting, foraging, and sentry duty. One of the most fascinating behaviors of meerkats is their cooperative foraging and sentinel behavior. While some individuals search for food, others stand guard, scanning the surroundings for predators such as birds of prey or snakes. These sentinels emit alarm calls to warn the group of potential threats, allowing them to quickly seek refuge in burrows or thick vegetation. Meerkats primarily feed on insects like beetles, spiders, scorpions, and small vertebrates, but they also consume fruits and plants when available. Despite their small size, they are skilled hunters and can take down prey much larger than themselves. In the Okavango Delta, meerkats adapt to the seasonal changes in water levels and vegetation, moving to higher ground during the wet season and returning to lower areas during the dry season. He’s logged well over 600 walking hours with over 120 dangerous game encounters. Jack’s approach to safari guiding comes from an authentic place of understanding the surroundings around him and observing how they coexist with one-another. That, at our very core, is the ethos of Cambium Safari - connecting people to nature. We’re a US-based business with deep roots, love, and admiration for Botswana. Over the last few years, we’ve prioritized building genuine relationships with Botswana natives and the land around them.
