Next time you are in the Canyon Lake area you must check out Grayla's Ices! Family owned business serving incredible flavored ice! With or without dairy. They are conveniently located right up the road from the beach access road and marina. Great way to end the day at the lake with the family!

Did you know there’s more than just red rocks in southern Utah? This colorful layer of rock below Mount Kinesava is called the Chinle layer and it is known for its unique mix of blue, purple, grey and red colors.

The Chinle layer is made of sedimentary rock and was formed between 210 to 225 millions years ago. The landscape at that time included large river systems and vast floodplains. These rivers deposited the mudstone, siltstone, and sandstone that make up the formation today. The colored mudstone is mostly made of bentonite clay, which helps give the rock its distinct colors.

Similar processes happened in Petrified Forest National Park to create landscapes like the painted desert and blue mesas. Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona is known for its beautiful, petrified wood and amazing painted desert, which are both features of the Chinle layer. But besides creating colorful landscapes, the Chinle formation is also known for petrified wood. Due to this, Zion and Petrified Forest both have petrified wood!

At Zion you can see more of this formation on the Chinle Trail. This exciting 11.7-mile trail travels past Chinle mudstone and over petrified wood.
