One highlight? A private longtail boat day to Krabi’s stunning islands, winding through limestone cliffs and hidden lagoons. Just the two of them, island-hopping like locals (but with all the luxury touches).

One of my favorite photos from Tokyo captures the beautifully stacked sake barrels, or kazaridaru, displayed at Meiji Shrine. These decorative barrels are annual offerings from sake brewers across Japan, honoring Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken, who are enshrined there.

Though the barrels are empty, they hold deep symbolic meaning. In Shinto tradition, sake is a sacred beverage used in rituals to purify, offer gratitude, and forge a spiritual connection with the gods (kami). The presence of these barrels at Meiji Shrine reflects the intertwined history of Shinto and sake, embodying prayers for prosperity, a successful brewing season, and the continuation of Japan’s rich cultural heritage.

Beyond their religious significance, these offerings also acknowledge Emperor Meiji’s role in modernizing Japan, which included fostering industrial growth—sake brewing among them. Seeing these barrels in person is a striking reminder of the reverence for tradition that thrives alongside innovation in Japan.

Starting May 7, 2025, you’ll need a REAL ID-compliant license or another TSA-approved form of identification to fly domestically within the U.S.

✈ Check your driver’s license today! If it doesn’t have a star or another REAL ID indicator, it’s time to upgrade. While passports, Global Entry cards, and other approved IDs will still work, having a REAL ID makes travel smoother and stress-free.

🔹 Pro Tip: Don’t wait until the last minute! The application process can take time, and we’d hate for travel delays to disrupt your plans.

Day Two: Tokyo

Our first stop was the Hie Shrine, a peaceful and historic Shinto shrine nestled in the heart of the city. Known for its red torii gates, it’s a hidden gem in Tokyo. It isn’t as crowded as many of the shrines in Tokyo and I highly recommend it.

Next, we visited the Toyosu Market, Japan’s iconic fish market and a haven for fresh seafood lovers. I loved the energy here. Food stalls, after food stalls of yummy food, and fresh fish for sale. Japan is renowned for its exceptional knives, so I purchased an all-purpose Japanese knife that I can’t wait to use in my kitchen. I also purchased the most beautiful Christmas ornament. It is made out of a vintage kimono.

Afterward, we headed to Meiji Jingu, a Shinto shrine surrounded by a forest in the heart of the city.

Our next stop was Shibuya Sky, a rooftop observatory offering panoramic views of Tokyo. I’ve never experienced anything like it. The views were nothing short of spectacular!

We then made our way to the famous Shibuya Crossing, where during peak hours, as many as 2,000 people cross the intersection at once. It’s a chaotic yet, so fun to experience in person.

That night we had a ramen tour. Pro tip! Always eat where the locals eat. There was not tourist in sight and the food was absolutely delicious!

Our first day in Tokyo completely blew me away! We kicked things off at TeamLab Borderless, an immersive digital art museum with interconnected, interactive exhibits that combine light, sound, and projections. It was absolutely incredible!

Next, we visited Don Quijote, a massive five-story store that sells everything from knives and clothes to groceries. Our mission? Japanese skincare! Skincare in Japan is very reasonable priced. I stocked up on all the essentials tax-free—can’t wait to share these finds with the girls. Pro tip: Download the Translator Go app. Simply snap a picture of the product label written in Japanese, and it instantly translates the text into English.

We then explored the Asakusa district, known for its traditional charm and bustling streets. We grabbed a snack at a food stand serving the most amazing cheese curry pocket. Lunch took us to a Zashiki-style restaurant, where we sat on tatami mats and enjoyed an incredible tempura meal.

Afterward, we hopped on a rickshaw for a tour through Tokyo, visiting the iconic Asakusa Kinryu-zan and Senso-ji Temples. Our guide, Tiger, was an absolute doll—so cheerful, kind, and talented at capturing great photos of us!

The next stop was a traditional tea ceremony, where we dressed in kimonos and learned about the history and rituals behind it. (Fun fact: those kimonos are wrapped tight!)

We returned to our hotel, The Okura Tokyo, where we did a quick site inspection. The hotel is centrally located, offering stunning views of Tokyo, with rooms starting at a spacious 500 square feet which is u heard of in Japan. It’s the perfect mix of luxury and comfort. Not to mention, their buffet breakfast was delish!

We ended up walking 8 miles and racking up over 18,000 steps. Make sure you wear comfy shoes!

Today, we’ll be exploring with a private guide, Damiano, from one of my go-to companies I use for Japan travel. I can’t wait to see what’s in store!
