Spirit Airlines, the nation's largest ultra-low-cost carrier, has filed for bankruptcy protection, the company announced today.

Importantly for passengers, all of Spirit's operations will continue during the proceedings — meaning, travelers who have tickets booked on Spirit in the coming months should expect their flights to operate as planned.

So, what happened?

Spirit has faced myriad financial hurdles in recent years, dating back to the start of the coronavirus pandemic. The airline has racked up billions of dollars in debt, more than $1 billion of which was coming due soon.

The airline fleet has also been significantly affected by an engine issue affecting a wide range of airlines and aircraft worldwide — which has caused Spirit to slash routes over the course of this year.

Earlier in 2024, the airline saw a federal court block its planned merger with JetBlue — a scuttled deal that followed failed merger talks with budget airline competitor Frontier Airlines.

Meanwhile, Spirit has also fallen victim to industry trends that have negatively affected a handful of budget airlines in recent years. After low-cost carriers enjoyed widespread success in the 2010s, the larger network airlines — most notably Delta Air Lines and United Airlines — have led the U.S. airline industry profitability since the pandemic.

While news of the bankruptcy might be unsettling to Spirit customers, there's a strong precedent of big U.S. carriers continuing to fly largely as normal during bankruptcy proceedings.

Many of the largest U.S. carriers have gone through bankruptcy proceedings this century — American Airlines being the most recent, culminating with its merger with US Airways, which closed in 2014. Delta Air Lines and United Airlines each declared bankruptcy in the 2000s, also going on to merge with major rivals and emerge as stronger, leaner competitors.

Important Notice – Enforcement of Mexico Customs Regulations on Electronics

Effective immediately, please be aware of the following guidelines concerning the import of electronic devices for travelers to Mexico. Each traveler is permitted to bring ONE portable computing device (e.g., laptop, notebook, or iPad) without incurring an import fee.

If passengers bring multiple devices, such as a laptop and an iPad, each will be treated as a separate item, which may result in additional fees.

Allowed Items:

• One laptop or similar portable computing device such as an IPad

Limited Items

• Up to 3 cell phones

• 1 GPS

• 2 Cameras

• 1 pair of binoculars

• 4 fishing poles

Exceeding these limits may result in customs duties starting at 19% of the item’s estimated value, with some cases reporting fees as high as 200%. To avoid these potential charges, please advise your clients traveling to Mexico to adhere to these guidelines.

US Launches Online Passport Renewal Service

Americans who are renewing their passports will now be able to do so online.

“This is a new service which will allow Americans to pay to upload a photo and to apply completely online, with no need to appear in person or to send documents through the mail,” Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs Rena Bitter said, noting that it “will be available 24/7.”

The service is open to adults who are renewing a regular 10-year passport that has expired within the past five years or expires in the coming year. At this point, the online passport renewal service is only accessible for Americans with a US address.

The service will be accessible at travel.state.gov and customers will be able to walk you through a few questions to make sure that you’re eligible to use the service.

The processing time for passport renewals is six to eight weeks.

Southwest Airlines To End Open Seating Policy - The Dallas-based airline announced today it is putting an end to its open seating policy, will begin offering premium seating, and is introducing redeye flight options.

The airline said the changes are the next step in a "continuing strategic transformation" and are designed to "elevate the customer experience."

In addition to assigning seats, Southwest will offer premium, extended legroom portions of plane cabins. One-third of seats will offer the extended option.

Also in May, the airline began listing airfares on Google Flights, making it easier for travelers to compare their options on a single dashboard.

United, Delta, and American Airlines issue global ground stop on all flights

Flights in the air will stay in the air, but no flights will take off.

American Airlines, United and Delta have asked the FAA for global ground stop on all flights, according to an alert from the FAA on Friday morning.

The FAA is telling air traffic controllers to tell airborne pilots that airlines are currently experiencing communication issues.

Meanwhile, flights in the air will stay in the air, but no American, United or Delta flights will take off.

It is unclear how widespread the issue is but Melbourne Airport in Australia has also said they are "experiencing a global technology issue" which is impacting their check-in procedures.

No further details have been released.

The Harris County District Clerk’s Office is always proactive when it comes to serving our community. That’s why this week our Passport section has started accepting walk-in customers that have to submit a passport application Monday through Friday and haven’t been able to schedule an appointment.

This new service makes getting a passport even more convenient for Harris County residents, in addition to our Saturday passport fairs. Applicants must provide proof of U.S. citizenship, a valid photo ID, and passport photos.

Spirit Airlines has updated its policy to include a stricter dress code for passengers. FAA bans U.S. airlines from flying into Haiti for 30 days after gunfire hit Spirit. All U.S. airlines and other and commercial operators have been banned from flying into Haiti for at least 30 days, the Federal Aviation Administration announced Tuesday. The decision came a day after a Spirit Airlines and JetBlue Airways flights sustained gunfire over Port-au-Prince airspace on Monday. The Spirit flight was a mile east of Toussaint Louverture International Airport when it was fired upon and the JetBlue fight had just taken off and was bound for New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport. No passengers were injured, the airlines said, but a spokesperson for Spirit said that a flight attendant sustained minor injuries. In response to the incident, JetBlue announced cancellation of flights until Dec. 2, while American Airlines said flights would be canceled until Thursday. Spirit, which canceled flights out of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport into both Port-au-Prince and Cap-Haitien, said flights were canceled pending an investigation of the shooting.
