The next two days on our Viking British Isles Explorer (booked by BPP Tours/Carson Travel) included visits to Cawdor Castle and the Culledon Battlefield in the Scottish Highlands.
Cawdor Castle has been in continuous use as a family home since 1372. Lady Cawdor lives there half a year now.

I knew nothing about the Cullendin Batllefield, so now there’s more homework to.

I’m usually a very careful researcher when travel involves several stops. Unfortunately, I thought “Viking will take of it” or alert us about local happenings that could affect our visit. I should have done my homework about Edinburgh. Not only were there two giant festivals happening, along with the annual military Tattoo. Edinburgh was wall-to-wall people. Here’s where it was my failure-should have pre-purchased tickets to Edinburgh Castle prior to our visit. Same for the Military Tattoo.
All that said, we still saw fun and beautiful things, like Fetters College, the inspiration for Hogwarts and a restored Georgian house.

A very quick stop in Northern Ireland, Belfast. Stunning ocean views and countryside on the way to the Giant’s Causeway.

Yesterday’s shore excursion was Castles of Wales, starting near Holyhead. First stop: Caernarfon Castle, truly medieval from 1283. Second stop: Penrhyn Castle, built in 1816. Apparently Mr. Penrhyn wanted to show his wealth and power as a slate czar. Since he wasn’t eligible to inherit a castle, he built his own.
Loved that all the signs were in Welsh and English. Take a look at the Name Dropper photo to see the longest town name in Wales.

Next stop, on Viking Saturn, British Isles Explorer: Liverpool, which is WAY more than the Beatles. A spectacular reading room and library and the Liverpool Cathedral. The library holds the largest collection of Audobon bird prints in the UK

Original Dublin post failed to post so let’s try again. A full, but too short stop in Dublin on the British Isles Explorer. We tendered from the ship, visited St. Patrick’s Cathedral (one of many in the British Isles), had a half-pint of Guinness, did some shopping, listened to street buskers and ended up at the Molly Malone statue (the Tart with the Cart). Guess where you’re supposed to touch for luck?

Running behind on travel posts for the Viking Saturn British Isles Explorer. A full, but too short day in Dublin. The stop involved tendering from the ship, a visit to St. Patrick’s Cathedral (one of many St. Patrick’s across the British Isles), a half-pint of Guinness, a performance from the choristers, some shopping, listening to street buskers and a look at Molly Malone or the The Tart with a Cart. Guess where you touch for luck?

Our Viking British Isles Cruise has three on-board experts. This morning’s talk was about Vikings. This afternoon’s is about our next port of call, Dublin. Since it’s a sailing day, we sampled the sauna, whirlpool tubs, the all-around shower and the Snow Room. After a lunch of grilled ahi tuna, all is good! My husband got a tour of the bridge with the captain.

This is another in a series of adventure stories from our Best of the British Isles Viking Cruise booked by BPP Tours/Carson Travel. Yesterday’s afternoon shore excursion took us to Canterbury and the Canterbury Cathedral, where Thomas Becket was murdered. Although we enjoyed the charming town, it was VERY crowded due to many local graduations. So many, that parts of the Cathedral were closed to the public for the ceremonies.

This morning’s shore excursion from Dover was to Leeds Castle. Dating from a Norman stronghold in 1086, the castle, moat and hunting grounds has been the home of six queens, titled and untitled Britons and a wealthy American heiress. Incredible example of historical reuse!
