Christianity in Japan Overview:
The Gospel was first introduced to Japan in 1549 by St. Francis Xavier, a Jesuit missionary. His efforts led to a significant growth of Christianity, with thousands converting, and the establishment of a strong Catholic community. By 1614, there were over 650,000 Christians, including nobles. However, persecution began after Japan’s samurai ruler, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, banned Christianity in 1587, leading to the martydrom of 26 Christians in 1597. These martyrs, including native Jesuits, foreign Franciscans, and lay Catholics, were crucified after a 600-mile death march. They are collectively known as the 26 Martyrs of Japan, or St. Paul Miki and Companions. Despite ongoing persecution, including other mass martyrdoms, Christianity continued to grow in Japan.
On pilgrimage we will see St. Francis Xavier’s missionary work as well as St. Maximilian Kolbe’s church and grotto. You will also experience the vibrant culture and amazing food!! The dates are November 19-28, 2025. Thanksgiving Dinner will be in Tokyo and we will return just in time for Thanksgiving weekend with family.
