Our newest class of leaders went on a weeklong training expedition at the beginning of this summer to prepare for the upcoming season of trips.

The Gila Wilderness provided a challenging and fun environment to practice skills like orienteering, knot tying, outdoor ethics, and leadership. We’re looking forward to utilizing these skills on our trips this semester!

Today we revisit our Spring Break trip to highlight one of the most unique features of the area we visited- the slot canyon!

ROPE’s trip through Buckskin Gulch meant we got to experience 14 miles of one of the longest (and most dangerous) slot canyons in the world. At some points, the canyon is less than one meter wide and more than 30 meters deep.

45 miles over rugged terrain was no small feat, and we’re glad the spring break adventurers had each other to lean on throughout the trip.

Our Story

ROPE is an outdoor adventure program and service of the Gibbs Recreation and Wellness Center. We work to provide the Rice University community opportunities to explore the outdoors, relax, and disconnect from our busy lives. The Outdoor Adventure Center provides outdoor gear rental services to members of our facility. ROPE Outdoor Adventure Trips are available to all members of the Rice University Community. Detailed information is available on our website recreation.rice.edu/rope
