African Safari Update - August 2024 -

Being on safari in Africa is synonymous with excitement, adventure and action. Extend your safari by a few days on the coast or better yet an island somewhere, and you can take the experience from hard rock to easy listening in a matter of hours. Boots in the morning and flip flops by nightfall. Whi...

Madagascar for me, has been an on and off love affair. Mostly of the long distance kind but always smoldering just below the surface. Just an image, a song or a thought away from being back where it all began in 1999. It was infatuation at first sight when I saw my first ring-tailed lemur at Berenty...

African Safari Update - June 2024 -

I found the Africa I was looking for in Tanzania and Kenya recently. I found it in the briefest of eye to eye contact with a migrating zebra in the Serengeti, in the boundless energy of baby Thomson’s gazelles playfully bouncing around the open savannah, in pairs of Burchells’s zebras cozily res...

No Africa trip is complete without a sighting of a Secretarybird, at least in my book. We saw so many in the Serengeti and the Mara this last May, likely around 30 or so. Not many of them were willing subject (always walking away), but I did capture one or two. And several other birds in the process. Here are a few.

Kathy and I spent the last few days in a couple of private conservancies to the north of the Masai Mara National Park, at Saruni Leopard Hill, Hemingway's Ol Seki, Saruni Mara and now Kicheche Mara Camp. One thing they all have in common: being able to drive off-road, often a crucial element for successful wildlife photography. Several of my photos taken here would have been near impossible to get from a long distance.

Want to see some lions on safari? There's no place like the Serengeti in Tanzania - or the Masai Mara in Kenya. In just a few days we must have seen close to 50 different lions already. Here are a few.

It only takes a day back in Africa to remember why we missed it so much.  It only takes a single morning drive in the Serengeti to be reminded why it is the quintessential African safari experience. The Mt. Everest of wildlife sanctuaries, the Serengeti is without equal in terms of the totality of ...

Made it to Entara's Olmara tented camp on the eastern side of the central Serengeti. An adventurous drive along a muddy, rough track to get here, but expertly managed by our guide Said Kotoku. Here are a few more pics taken in the area over the last couple of days.

We’re well into 2024 and all we can say is wow!  The year started off with a bang and it hasn’t stopped. We are fielding more inquiries for African travel than we probably ever have in 30+ plus years and so are our colleagues in the Safari Professionals of the Americas. It appears that internat...

African Safari Update - December 2023 -

The story of our November Namibia trip ended with a couple of nights in the heart of one of the driest deserts of the world, the Namib. It was the final chapter of a pretty good book, as travel tomes go. A book that had plenty of drama, some comic relief, memorable characters and enduring memories.....

What is it that attracts us most to Namibia, in southwestern Africa? Its astonishingly beautiful desert & dune landscapes, its fascinating people, its diverse wildlife? On a recent trip we experienced some of all of those and came away with renewed passion for this vast, sparsely populated country. One lasting impression of this trip, which included the Etosha area, parts of the Kaokoveld, the Hoanib River Valley, Skeleton Coast National Park, Swakopmund and Sossusvlei? That the wildlife experience is underrated. We saw lots of animals, often in arid areas where you'd least expect them. Here are a few from this trip, and a couple from Jason's visit to the same area, earlier.

We are often asked about the best times to travel to specific areas and destinations within Africa. Understandably so. If you’re keen to experience the annual wildebeest and zebra migration in East Africa, you’re not going to enjoy being in the southern Serengeti in August, when the migration is...

African Safari Update - September 2023 -

What do you bring back from a trip to Africa? Photos and videos of course. Maybe a few small gifts or a pair of colorful kikoi pants, hand stitched in Shela. Beyond that, the intangibles. Memories which could never be captured electronically. Gigabytes of recollections of incidents big and small whi...

Having spent much of the summer in Africa, Fish Eagle Safaris' Bert and Kathy observed several memorable wildlife scenes. A particularly unusual one was seeing a black-backed jackal trying to prevent a mob of vultures taking over an impala carcass. The jackal repeatedly charged into the vultures, in a totally fearless manner. Here are a few of the photos, taken in Ruaha National Park in Tanzania. In the end the vultures prevailed...

From the Editor’s Desk My heart broke a little bit in Tsavo a few weeks ago at the start of our recently concluded Fish Eagle Safaris Kenya trip. How many big cats can you realistically expect to see on an African safari trip? It depends on where you go but over the span of a couple of weeks in Kenya, you should see all of them. In November, Fish Eagle Safaris' Kathy and Bert Duplessis visited Karen Blixen Camp. The visit fell on a weekend while school was not in session, but thanks to Lillian Kathambi the One World Futbol and school supplies were delivered to The Mara United School on our behalf. Thank you Lillian!

The Mara United School is a boarding school only a few kilometers from Karen Blixen Camp. The school has approximately 320 students from ages 4 through 15 years old, from Kindergarten to Grade 8. Parents of many of the children are employed as staff at Karen Blixen Camp. The school is owned and managed by the local community and it is approved by the Ministry of Education and National Environment Management Authority.
