What were the two or three things which improved my photography most since I bought my first ‘proper’ camera - a Nikon D300 - for a Tanzania trip in 2008? Not always positioning the subject to be right smack in the middle of the frame. Thinking about depth of field, as in how much of what you see through the viewfinder, you want to be in focus, or not. And including some habitat in at least some of the pics. Better equipment (now a mirrorless Nikon D-9 with a 180-600 F/5.6-6.3 VR lens) has helped, too. These pics were taken on game drives out of Natural Selection's Tawana Camp in the Moremi area of Botswana, in December last year.

No Africa trip is complete without a sighting of a Secretarybird, at least in my book. We saw so many in the Serengeti and the Mara this last May, likely around 30 or so. Not many of them were willing subject (always walking away), but I did capture one or two. And several other birds in the process. Here are a few.

Kathy and I spent the last few days in a couple of private conservancies to the north of the Masai Mara National Park, at Saruni Leopard Hill, Hemingway's Ol Seki, Saruni Mara and now Kicheche Mara Camp. One thing they all have in common: being able to drive off-road, often a crucial element for successful wildlife photography. Several of my photos taken here would have been near impossible to get from a long distance.
