African Safari Update - October 2024 -

As children, my three siblings and I spent our winter vacations mostly inside Kruger National Park in the traditional South African style. Just under two weeks or so on a self-drive - mostly self-catered - safari, split among public rest camps such as Skukuza, Olifants, Satara and Punda Maria. We we...

African Safari Update - August 2024 -

Being on safari in Africa is synonymous with excitement, adventure and action. Extend your safari by a few days on the coast or better yet an island somewhere, and you can take the experience from hard rock to easy listening in a matter of hours. Boots in the morning and flip flops by nightfall. Whi...

African Safari Update - July 2024 -

Madagascar for me, has been an on and off love affair. Mostly of the long distance kind but always smoldering just below the surface. Just an image, a song or a thought away from being back where it all began in 1999. It was infatuation at first sight when I saw my first ring-tailed lemur at Berenty...

African Safari Update - June 2024 -

I found the Africa I was looking for in Tanzania and Kenya recently. I found it in the briefest of eye to eye contact with a migrating zebra in the Serengeti, in the boundless energy of baby Thomson’s gazelles playfully bouncing around the open savannah, in pairs of Burchells’s zebras cozily res...

No Africa trip is complete without a sighting of a Secretarybird, at least in my book. We saw so many in the Serengeti and the Mara this last May, likely around 30 or so. Not many of them were willing subject (always walking away), but I did capture one or two. And several other birds in the process. Here are a few.

Kathy and I spent the last few days in a couple of private conservancies to the north of the Masai Mara National Park, at Saruni Leopard Hill, Hemingway's Ol Seki, Saruni Mara and now Kicheche Mara Camp. One thing they all have in common: being able to drive off-road, often a crucial element for successful wildlife photography. Several of my photos taken here would have been near impossible to get from a long distance.

Want to see some lions on safari? There's no place like the Serengeti in Tanzania - or the Masai Mara in Kenya. In just a few days we must have seen close to 50 different lions already. Here are a few.

African Safari Update - May 2024 -

It only takes a day back in Africa to remember why we missed it so much.  It only takes a single morning drive in the Serengeti to be reminded why it is the quintessential African safari experience. The Mt. Everest of wildlife sanctuaries, the Serengeti is without equal in terms of the totality of ...

Made it to Entara's Olmara tented camp on the eastern side of the central Serengeti. An adventurous drive along a muddy, rough track to get here, but expertly managed by our guide Said Kotoku. Here are a few more pics taken in the area over the last couple of days.
