STA is deeply saddened by the passing of Dikembe Mutombo, the Houston Rockets Hall of Famer. We fondly remember the time he wished STA a Happy Anniversary a couple years ago. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time. May he rest in peace.
Two weeks ago, we shared the news of the passing of a cherished member of our STA family, Mikie Jauregui, on Thursday, August 29th. Mikie was not only a true friend, but also a dedicated STA Group Leader, Tour Representative, and passionate patriot. Over the years, he made a profound impact on countless students, leading numerous tours to Washington, D.C. and New York City, and ensuring that each experience was memorable and meaningful.
As a Group Leader and STA Tour Representative, Mikie was a person everyone could depend on—his presence was a constant source of joy and support. Group Leaders and students alike looked forward to seeing him year after year, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
To honor Mikie’s legacy and his commitment to student travel, we have established the "Mikie J. Red, White, and Blue Memorial Scholarship Fund." This scholarship will help provide students with the same life-changing travel opportunities that Mikie was so passionate about. Below, you will find a link to donate in his memory. For those who knew him well, you’ll remember how important it was to him that every student had the chance to experience travel through fundraising. Mikie worked tirelessly to ensure that each student had the resources to fully fund their trips, believing deeply in the power of these experiences.
We have also created a Tribute Video to celebrate Mikie’s life. We hope you will take a moment to watch and reflect on the many memories and moments that made his life so special.
In honor of Mikie, we invite you to join us in wearing RED, WHITE, and BLUE on Monday, September 16th — what would have been his 74th birthday. These colors, which Mikie so proudly wore, are a fitting tribute to his patriotic spirit and a meaningful way to remember our dear friend and colleague.
