A cruise ship captain or cruise line has the responsibility to do everything within their power to protect their passengers from any type of harm as long as they are in their care. To assert that because this passenger went too far with her complaint and could have been less critical may have resulted a better result is only a guess at best. Like every other passenger, she had money invested and therefore, expectations for the investment. While expectations vary, hers would not have included the experiences she had.

How, then, to resolve the complaint and make everyone happy? For the cruise line, the best outcome is to negotiate an agreement that is satisfactory to both parties and learn from the experience for future weather related issues. For the guest, the best outcome would be understanding what the descriptive nature used in the complaint e.g. the rhetoric and accusations, will and will not get you whether you agree or not. For the general cruise public, the best result would be knowing which cruise lines will look out for your personal safety, your best interests, and which ones to avoid in future bookings.

Joanne Phillips' story is a reminder that when you have an NCL complaint, you have to focus on one service lapse instead of building a case for the inherent evil of the company. But let's get right down to the details.
