Historic Miles Ranch A family’s journey to save, restore and rehabilitate an abandoned historic property near Humboldt, NE The Miles Ranch, est. The Bruxellas Family
(11)

circa 1855, was the first great ranch west of the Missouri River and is home to Nebraska's oldest barn. The property is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Like the Miles Ranch, there are hundreds of properties across Nebraska that deserve a second chance. It took a very big dream and lots of courage to get us here. We always dreamt of saving an old house and barn. We envisioned ra

ising our children in the country with open spaces... in a place where work and play are one. Unfortunately, education and jobs kept taking us to bigger cities and further from the idyllic life we longed for. When the opportunity knocked on our door, we heard the call and knew it was right. In our first visit here, as we walked through the field of old walnut and cedar trees, historic home, and rustic barn, it was like we could hear them crying softly… please give us another chance, so we can shelter and protect a new family. That is when we fell in love with the property. While this is our home where we are raising our 4 children, we fully understand our responsibility to care for it. We are merely the current caretakers and curators for a long while before the next family will come to enjoy it as we have. Along the way, memories will be created. We will enjoy our friends and family that come to visit us. We will meet new people and have long conversations. We want to thank those of you who share our dream with us and admire this beautiful place we call home.

Old concrete planter gets new rose bush. When your house is in constant restoration mode, there is little time for gardening. This is slowly changing thanks to our youngest daughter.

Meet Casper, our newest fur family member. We adopted him all the way from Texas. Surprisingly, he loves all this snow. He is a gentle giant. He had it pretty rough growing up and is struggling with some health issues right now. We pray he will be ok.

Rare photograph of a barn raising at the Miles Ranch in the late 1800s. Back in those days, the community would come together to help build these costly and necessary structures. The completion of the project would often be celebrated with a feast and dance.

We are thankful for our community. May we remember and learn from history and may we take care of each other.

God bless and Happy Thanksgiving!

This rocking chair and two family Bibles have recently been donated to the Miles Ranch Foundation by Catherine Miles Zimba and her husband, Ken. Catherine is the great, great, Grandaughter of Colonel Stephen Boyd Miles. The 1800s rocking chair belonged to Colonel Miles. The two Miles Family Bibles are dated 1815 and 1816. Thank you, Catherine and Ken, for these wonderful donations! We are humbled by your generosity.

Happy Thanksgiving! We have called the Miles Ranch our home for almost 12 years and we are so thankful for that.

In this home, we have raised our children and matured. We have created memories and felt the seasons change. We lost, loved, and found peace. Each year bringing new experiences, challenges, and opportunities.

We know the Miles Ranch is a special place and for this reason we have opened our home to many. As a family, we remain committed to steward the property being conscientious that time is precious.

May you find many reasons to be thankful this season.

This greenhouse at the Miles Ranch was built 100% with repurposed old windows, sourced primarily from the mansion house. It became our pandemic project of 2020/21. It is a place where our youngest daughter will be able to expand her hobby of gardening. The greenhouse is not yet complete as we still need to finish painting the structure. We will also need to replace a total of 48 glass panels that were cracked, broken, or missing. Thank you, Lonnie Lindsey, for seeing the vision and executing it.
