Road cuts are a geologist's friend (including geology nerds like us). If that's the case, then drones are a geologist’s friend too! This awesome view can be found in the recently dug roadcut along the new Toquerville Bypass road that is still under construction. Digging of this roadcut began in August 2023. This drone footage does a great job of showing four levels of historical deposition. The top is sand and alluvial material that was recently deposited (last few 1000 years). Then there is a basalt layer created from a large lava flow. Next are more deposits that occurred before the lava flow. Then, finally, the colorfully-layered Iron Springs Formation is exposed. If it weren't for the roadcut, you wouldn't know it's there! Look for our upcoming video that will explain more about what's going on in this new geologic site thanks to new development.
We were roaming around the Mojave Desert last week working on our latest video project that will cover Route 66 from Barstow to Newberry Springs. Here is an excerpt showing a unique place in history, "The World's Longest Driveway" in Newberry Springs, which holds some interesting racing history.
After visiting the Black Hills of South Dakota, we collected enough information and imagery to create an overview video of all the places to see. That will take some time. In the meantime however, here's a quick and fun video of one of our favorite beer joints in Rapid City. Enjoy!
Could there be a black hole over the Pacific Ocean off the coast of California? No, this is Monday & Tuesday's storm approaching. March and April is a great time to go out and visit the great Southwest, especially its desert regions. However, plan your trips with the weather in mind because storms, like this black hole, come in between the patches of good weather and can either spoil your trip or enhance it with scenes of dramatic weather.
