“I pledge you, I pledge myself, to a new deal for the American people.” -Franklin Roosevelt, Acceptance Speech, Democratic National Convention, July 2, 1932

"At the Democratic Convention in Chicago, FDR faced formidable rivals, including the party’s 1928 nominee Al Smith and House Speaker John Nance Garner. In those days, Presidential nominees did not appear at party conventions. FDR defied that tradition, flew to Chicago to accept his nomination, and electrified the delegates with his call for a “New Deal.” - FDR Library

This building was located on Albany Post Road across from Albertson St. It sat on the property which is now the Roosevelt Inn. It was used as a school until 1876 when it was given to the Fire Department. Eagle Engine Company and Active Hose Company shared the building. In 1885 an addition was built to house the newly formed Rescue Hook and Ladder Company. On May 29th 1893 the building was destroyed by a fire. The engine and hose companies where able to save their equipment, but unfortunately the ladder truck was lost.

Happy Birthday, Ruth!

Happy Birthday Ruth Livingston Mills!

Ruth Mills was born into the influential Livingston family in 1855 in Newport, Rhode Island. In 1882, she married Ogden Mills and soon after inherited her childhood home, Staatsburgh. Ruth Mills applied herself energetically to the social scene and entertained frequently at her houses in Newport, New York City, and Staatsburgh. The Mills family resided in their Staatsburgh home primarily in the fall as a setting for numerous house parties and dinners hosted by Mrs. Mills. An active sportswoman, she enjoyed golf, tennis, horseback riding, and especially ice skating.

Book a tour of Staatsburgh at Bookeo.com/StaatsburghSHS and come wish Mrs. Mills a happy 169th birthday!

A message from the Town of Hyde Park Historian, Carney Rhinevault:

Dear friends and neighbors, I will be leading a walk around downtown Hyde Park this coming Wednesday, Aug. 14, from 10am to maybe 11am or 11:30am. We will start at the Hyde Park Library, go west on Main Street, turn north on Park Place, turn east on Market Street, and then south on Albany Post Road to finish at the Historical Society Museum in the old fire station.
I will fill my narration with little known facts and maybe some gossip (only about people who are dead). The Museum was remodeled two years ago and is wonderful. The walk will be slow-paced so wheelchairs are welcome.

“For those of you thinking of honoring a Hyde Park Hometown Hero with a banner, the round 5 banner applications with the appropriate paperwork needs to be into the Town's supervisor's office by August 10th. Any applications received after that date will be part of round 6. Depending on the fall weather round 6 may not be put up until spring of next year.
If anyone just wants to make a donation to help support the older Civil War Veterans banners can make a check out to the Town of Hyde Park Veterans Banner Program.

On behalf of the Veterans Committee thank you for your support.”
