As we reflect on this last year, we are so thankful for what 2024 brought us at The Argo Mill and Tunnel. Thank you to everyone who came out to tour the Mighty Argo, experience the joys of gold panning, and learn more about our beautiful state’s history.

Did you know… 🤔

The Argo Mill and Tunnel’s iconic red color holds a unique purpose! While the deep red hue of The Mighty Argo is a beautiful and iconic staple to the view of Idaho Springs, this same red color was a guide for miners back in the day while traveling through the mountains. The bright red is an easy color to spot, so miners would often look for the red of The Argo Mill to know they were traveling in the right direction.

Even today, the red mill is easy to spot from a far distance, and it stands as a historical landmark along Clear Creek.

Did you know that the colder months used to cause miners many problems, especially at the Colorado mines? Transportation was often limited, water drainage would freeze, machinery would break down, and miners’ work conditions would be worse than ever.

Nevertheless, with all these issues, the miners were resilient and worked with what they had. No mining meant no income, so working 10 to 12 hour shifts was critical to make a living and, quite honestly, to survive the cold.

There’s nothing like enjoying the cozy winter scenery in the Rocky Mountains. Stop into Idaho Springs for a scenic visit only 30 miles west of Denver, and drop into The Argo Mill and Tunnel to enjoy a unique tour of the site during the wintertime! With snowy, surrounding peaks and a town covered in icicles, winter at the Argo is a magical experience.

During the Mighty Argo’s peak years, miners had to bear the biggest danger of the Rocky Mountains: the cold of the winter. As miner’s couldn’t fight off the cold, they had to find ways to protect themselves and each other from the bitter chill.

Snow and ice made above-ground operations difficult, so ore transportation and processing often experienced delays. Additionally, any machinery needed to be ran continuously so it wouldn’t freeze up. Inside the mines, however, miners were slightly shielded from the harsh weather and could still work up to 12-hour shifts.

The cold months were a time of community, as miners and their families had to work together to stay warm, fed, and healthy.
