UPDATE: If you remember our beautiful male from last week, we wanted to share this lovely photo taken today of him and his new friend! This female was admitted exhibiting symptoms of brevetoxicosis, or red tide, and while she has improved she was still hesitant to eat on her own. We decided to put her in with our male Anhinga to encourage her to eat since he has a very strong appetite. As you can see, they were instant friends and as of this afternoon the female has begun to eat on her own!
There are many different species that benefit from social interactions with other members of their species, and we often house certain birds together to reduce stress and also encourage normal behaviors. Both of these beautiful birds are well on their way to a full recovery!
