Good morning, May 1st! Sea turtle nesting season will begins today. Some turtles have already been spotted on Florida’s beaches. Help do your part to keep them safe.

• Keep beaches dark: Turn off lights that are not necessary for human safety after sunset and remember to close shades or curtains at night.

• No flash photos: Avoid using bright cellphones, flashlights, or taking flash photos on the beach at night to prevent from disorienting turtles, which can cause them to crawl away from the ocean and put them at risk.

• Clear the way at the end of the day: Before leaving the beach, clear away furniture, boats, toys, and any trash left behind on the sand that can potentially become obstacles for crawling turtles. Please make sure to fill in any holes – turtles can potentially get trapped.

Please report sea turtles that are sick, injured, dead, entangled or are in danger to the FWC’s Wildlife Alert Hotline: 888-404-3922 so trained responders can help. Remember, sea turtles are protected by law. Keep your distance and give sea turtles space if you see one on the beach: Never touch a nesting turtle because it might leave the beach without nesting if disturbed.
