April is World Landscape Architecture Month (WLAM) - a time to celebrate how landscape architects shape healthier, more resilient communities. This year’s theme, Beyond Boundaries, recognizes how we push past traditional roles to make a lasting impact. Landscape architecture isn’t confined to green spaces. We collaborate across disciplines, advocate for equity, and design with infrastructure, policy, and culture in mind.

For example, during the early planning and programming of a transformational $4B academic medical campus in downtown Indianapolis, Browning Day’s landscape architecture team stepped beyond expected boundaries to become an integral voice on the executive design team.

Working alongside architects, engineers, and construction managers, we helped master plan not just the site—but the future of health. Our contributions weren’t limited to streetscapes or green roofs; we advocated for infrastructure that supports resilience, materials that promote beauty and wellbeing, and public spaces designed for dignity, equity, and healing. The voice of landscape architecture was influential, advocating for budget allocations for experientially rich features and materials, and integrated infrastructure design, inspiring a new way of thinking about large-scale projects.

We’re proud to share that Michael Eagan, AIA, Principal and Director of Faith-Based Design at Browning Day, has been named a 2025 Outstanding Alumni by the Estopinal College of Architecture and Planning (ECAP) at Ball State University. This honor celebrates a career built not only on architectural excellence but on deep-rooted service to Catholic communities throughout Indiana and beyond.

Michael’s work is defined by listening first—and leading with purpose. For over four decades, he has guided parishes and dioceses through some of the most meaningful projects of their lifetimes: cathedrals renewed, parishes reimagined, and faith-filled spaces brought to life. His designs are known for their reverence, their clarity, and their ability to reflect both tradition and forward momentum.

We’re honored to work alongside Michael as he continues to shape a portfolio of work that uplifts, inspires, and honors the communities we serve.

Congratulations, Michael, on this well-deserved recognition.

During this year’s Indiana Sustainability and Resilience Conference, a group of landscape architects will go through how site design can create great impact on climate resiliency.

Session abstract:
The site design is often overlooked or not quantified within the building design and construction industry's movement towards climate positive designs. This presentation will highlight the site's role in climate positive design and how, while often overlooked, can be just as impactful as the building envelope. The presentation is organized from macro to micro, starting with a high-level overview of the industry as a whole and various organizations leading the discussion of the site design then focusing on site specific case studies and observations including how performance data is being collected and utilized to track impact, laying the groundwork for advancing sustainability in future site design projects.

Browning Day is excited to have the opportunity to partner with Grand Universe and Grand Universe Development Partners, LLC to bring the Grand Universe Development to life. The vision of a world-leading STEM campus focused on humanity's future in Space, and here on this planet, is a bold concept and Westfield is the perfect place to host that vision.

The keystone of that vision is Johnson-Hagerman Center for Science and Space Exploration, which will house the world's largest domed planetarium, solar and celestial observatories, science and technology exhibits, feature educational partnerships with institutions around the state, and innovative outdoor education spaces.

Surrounding the Johnson-Hagerman Center campus are a resort and conference center, sports and entertainment district, and a robust town center community with housing, retail, and entertainment facilities. All of this builds on the excellent facilities of Westfield in Grand Park, the Monon Trail, and the fastest growing community in the state of Indiana.

Honoring a Legacy: The Richard Lugar Monument Unveiling

Today, we celebrate the life and legacy of former Indianapolis Mayor and US Senator Richard Lugar - commemorating a true leader whose influence spanned far beyond his Hoosier roots.

Browning Day’s Jonathan Hess worked alongside the committee and metalworker Ryan Feeney to encapsulate Senator Lugar's humility, brilliance, unwavering commitment to public service, and his relaxed yet powerful presence on the world stage.

The classical column hewn from a walnut tree is an ode to Lugar’s favorite place - the family farm, molded with real tree bark from the farm’s walnut grove. The globe within the column signifies his global impact, while the base, reminiscent of The Presidential Medal of Freedom he received in 2013, tells the story of his truly remarkable life and achievements.

As former President Obama said during the 2013 Medal of Freedom Ceremony, "Your legacy will endure in a safer and more secure world, and a safer and more secure America. And we pray that this nation produces more leaders with your sense of decency and civility and integrity. We are grateful to you."

WHERE TRADITION MEETS INNOVATION 🏁

Browning Day was given the opportunity to design a new control tower with additional program elements of hospitality and media in the early nineties. The creation of the IndyCar League in the mid-nineties provided a pause in our work, and the opportunity for the League to get established.

During that hiatus, we happened to have a conversation with Hulman-George family which explored the historical importance of the Pagoda to the brickyard. From that conversation, the curiosity of a modern interpretation was born.

Merging tradition with innovation, our work reinterpreted a traditional pagoda form while embracing the modern form of the 50’s tower to give rise to the Pagoda as we know it - perhaps one of the most iconic buildings in motorsport. Standing tall as a symbol of the importance of heritage, the Pagoda marks the start-finish line as the Cathedral of Speed.

As we gear up for this weekend's race, join us in remembering the legacy of racing at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway

“Humbled to have played a small part in making memories for fans around the world. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is truly a special place.” - Jonathan Hess

One project that is currently underway is the White River Greenway North Extension:

"The project includes extending the greenway north to 146th Street as well as the construction of a river overlook, parking lot and year-round restrooms. Once complete, the White River Greenway will span over five miles in Carmel. The project is in partnership with Prairie and is part of a regional effort to expand the greenway and turn attention toward the area’s most significant natural resource—the White River." - Clay Parks & Recreation

Exceptional design prioritizes the holistic health and wellbeing of individuals, communities, and our shared home. By considering the needs of occupants and pursuing sustainability in our work, design becomes a powerful tool to encourage flourishing, growth, and connection.

'The Backyard' at First Internet Bank reimagines urban landscapes, offering employees a dynamic 20,000 square-foot outdoor sanctuary to recharge, connect, and thrive. Situated atop a parking garage in downtown Fishers, the space is designed to cater to various needs of employees, with distinct zones for quiet reflection, social gatherings, and recreational activities.

The Center for Innovation fosters creativity and productivity amidst a 30-acre woodland. From centralized 'incubating' spaces where ideas can flourish to flexible work areas that encourage movement and connection, every aspect of The Center's design is tailored to support the wellbeing of its users. As the first dual-certified LEED/SITES project in Indiana (and the very first SITES achievement in the state), a large portion of the design was focused on managing stormwater including a new blend of porous asphalt pavement, rain gardens, vegetated swales, filtering forebays, planted littoral edged ponds, and the enhancement of an existing wetland.

At Browning Day, a wellness-oriented design approach means creating environments which empower individuals to thrive, while also honoring and regenerating the natural world around us.

Riverside Promenade is a testament to the transformative power of landscape architecture in fostering community connection. Running along the east side of the park from 16th Street to the 29th Street bridge, the promenade anchors a network of pathways and popular gathering spaces, including the White River Trail, Taggart Memorial Amphitheatre and Central Canal Trail. More than just a walkway, this cultural heritage corridor bridges the past and present, weaving together the diverse stories and traditions of Riverside's historic neighborhoods.

Throughout the planning and design process, Browning Day prioritized community input, ensuring that every voice was heard and woven into the fabric of the final design. We invite the community—both in Riverside and greater Indianapolis—to continue engaging with us, shaping the ongoing evolution of our shared spaces. Let's walk together, embracing connection and community every step of the way.
