Well tarpon fishing has been a bit tough the last few days. They didn't enjoy this last front before or after too much. Yesterday they seemed to completely disappear with the temperature drop and heavy wind we had. I had Dave out today and he really wanted to try and catch one. I said conditions overall didn't look terrible, but the fact they were gone yesterday and it was still on the chilly side didn't give me a lot of confidence. Also had to fish the old action craft as we're waiting on a lower unit for my other Contender. Anyways we gave it our best and ended up finding some fish showing. They weren't super cooperative, we caught a few sharks and waited for the tide to change. Then after a bit we hooked a monster tarpon - one of the largest ive caught in the last couple years in the 200 lb range! She gave us a good battle with a few good jumps. We were able to get her up boatside and almost rolled over, but as soon as we did a shark made her freak out and take off. We decided to break her off so she could escape rather than risk her getting eaten. Dave was all for that and was stoked to catch such a monster for his first tarpon! I'm off for spring break now but we'll be back for the tarpon grind in a couple weeks.

Nice one for Cody today! Had a cool north breeze but there were plenty of fish out there. We hooked up in the first 20 minutes with a wild fish that put on quite a show jumping and thrashing! Got her up for the face grab and a nice picture after a 30 minute battle. After that had high hopes they'd be chewing but we only had one other possible bite the next couple of hours that picked up the bait and dropped it. That's how she goes at least the one we got was a cooperative one! Off tomorrow and looks like another cold front Thursday so things may get a little tougher but we'll see what happens.

Fun day with Brad in the Backcountry. We left the tarpon alone and focused on snooks and reds. Conditions were favorable for that with light north winds. We had a variety of bait and worked our way around in the creeks. Caught a fish or two in just about every spot. Once the tide turned we got into a good rally of snook and caught quite a few. We went looking for a trophy for the last couple hours. Had a big snook we had jump and spit the hook and then got another shot at a possible big redfish but pulled the hook on that too - heartbreaker! But we did end up catching a cobia so that was a nice finish to the day. Off for the weekend and we'll be back at it Monday.

Awesome day with Rich! We focused on tarpon out back all day. It looked pretty nice with light winds that slicked out... Perfect day aside from the water still being a tad on the chilly side. Took some patience we didn't have much action early on aside from some sharks, including a couple of hammerheads! After the tide turned we got a nice 40 lb tarpon though finally. Moved around and got into another good school and hooked a big 100+ lber that threw the hook! Next stop we hooked another 40 lber that a big shark tried to eat... We did circles around the fish and chased the shark off and got a quick pic in the water and revived and release the fish unscathed. Haven't seen too many big sharks back there lately but there was a couple around today on the larger tarpon schools. Stopped on the way home and got a nice chunky 33 inch redfish!

Tarpon was the request and tarpon was what we caught! Couple nice size fish in town along with plenty of big jacks. Weather looks to be stabilizing now and should be back to our regular spring time program. If you are looking to chase the silver king the next week should yield good opportunities as we get closer to 'prime season.'

Jurassic kind of day! 🦕 The boys all got to catch tarpon including a double header we almost got the picture of both on. Monster tripletail and monster redfish! The tripletail is going home for dinner and a replica mount is on the way from Come got some!

Tis' the season! Tarpon fishing as good as it gets for February! Pete and pops were worn out and the Penn reels paired with Owner hooks got us our fish. Warm spring like weather has 'em stacked up and happy. Should continue as long as we don't get any more cold which for the time being it looks solid well into next week. Got the 25 contender bay sitting in the brand new TideRider boat lift! This lift is awesome the entire lift frame & boat sit completely out of the water. It can be easily moved around no permeant structures if you need to move slips, move for a hurricane, etc... It can be controlled with onboard controller, wireless FOBs, or a phone app - so easy to lift it out of the water when you go boating and not have to let it stay sunken down all day. There's a nice rail for attaching other things such as hose rack, cleaning table, trash can holder, whatever you want. All heavy duty plastic tanks and marine grade aluminum framing, definitely corrosion resistant. My previous lift they built is still going strong after 5 years and my other 23 is sitting in it. I'll likely also be adding a top eventually.

Another chilly one! Patience was the name of the game but we were rewarded with some good ones! Very cold again tonight and pretty windy tomorrow but looks like the wind should lay down somewhat next week and it will slowly warm up some. We're in winter time fishing mode here in the Keys. Wild footage from the other day! We were fighting a tarpon and another boat was drifting back with some live mullets out. A large barracuda skyrockets on one of the live baits and lands just feet from the guy, slamming into his poling platform! Always something that's scared me when live baiting at the bridges because the cudas are thick and can be aggressive like that. Capt. Rick Stanczyk is a born and bred native of Islamorada in the Florida Keys. His family owns and operates the world famous Bud n’ Mary’s Fishing Marina located right in the heart of Islamorada, the sportfishing capital of the world. Rick’s love of tarpon fishing started when he was a young boy fishing with his father, Capt. Richard Stanczyk Sr. They would spend many evenings fishing the local channels for fish up to 200 lbs, many of which weighed twice as much as a young Rick Stanczyk! Fast forward to 2008 and Rick started his own guiding business and tarpon quickly became the focal point of his fishing charters. There may not be a game fish that is more sought after than tarpon. They are hard to catch, get incredibly large, fight very hard, are super acrobatic, and here in the Florida Keys can be caught almost all year long. There are not many guides who put as much time in focused on tarpon as Rick does. He fishes for them all year long, with exception to the handful of weeks where it is freezing cold and just not happening (though they do occasionally get lucky and still catch a few then too!) With Rick’s fishing style you can be complete novice to the sport. He will teach you how to do everything yourself and encourages you to do so, but with his live and dead bait fishing style you don’t have to be an expert caster to catch a tarpon.
