Runoff timing primarily depends on the amount of snow to be melted. It takes longer to melt a larger snowpack. But a warm spring can melt snow faster and cause an earlier runoff. This year, we expect runoff timing to be very close to the long-term averages:
🌊June 16 in the Fall River
🌊June 17 in the Teton River
🌊June 21 in the upper Henry’s Fork
These are about two days earlier than last year at the watershed scale. We predict runoff timing will be similar to years like 2005, 2018, and 2019.

Have you had dinner ? The menu is a pleasant surprise with a great selection of steaks, seafood and regular specials. The food tastes as good as it looks! We enjoyed perfectly cooked bison and Ahi with a Wasabi glaze. The delectable sides are something you expect to find in a high end restaurant in a big city.
The service was excellent, the bar tender was a hoot! and the food left us wishing we had one more day on the schedule for another amazing meal.
Whether you are staying in or just passing through, make time to stop at Lake Side Lodge.

It’s National Park Week! You may have already guessed it but our favorite is Yellowstone National Park. Our friends at Yellowstone Forever compiled a great list of 10 facts you may not know about YNP.

1. Yellowstone encompasses 3,472 square miles (2,221,766 acres) which makes it larger than Rhode Island and Delaware combined.

2. There are more than 10,000 hydrothermal features in Yellowstone. The four types of thermal features are geysers, hot springs, mud pots, and fumaroles.

3. Yellowstone is home to more than 500 active geysers (more than half the world’s geysers).

4. Yellowstone Lake has 131.7 sq. miles of surface area and 141 miles of shoreline. It is the largest high elevation lake in North America.

5. Yellowstone is home to the largest concentration of mammals in the lower 48 states (67 species).

6. 285 species of birds can be found in Yellowstone (150 nesting).

7. There are more than 1,800 known archaeological sites within the park.

8. About 290 waterfalls can be found throughout Yellowstone’s 2.2 million acres.

Be Bear Aware!

"Do I need to carry bear spray even if I don't plan to hike in Yellowstone's backcountry?"

Short answer: Yes!

Wildlife, including bears, roam where they please. This means bears could venture through a parking lot, boardwalk, road, or trail, so it's best to be prepared no matter where you are in the park.

🧐 Stay alert and aware of your surroundings.
🧍‍♀️🧍🧍‍♂️ Hike in groups of three or more, stay on maintained trails and boardwalks, and make noise.
🐻 Carry bear spray in a readily accessible location (not stored in your backpack), and make sure you know how to use it!
🛑 Maintain a distance of at least 100 yards (91 m) away from bears and wolves, and at least 25 yards (23 m) away from all other animals, including bison and elk.
📸 Use binoculars, a telescope, or a telephoto lens to get a closer look.
📞 Report bear sightings and encounters to a park ranger immediately!

So many great restaurants in Island Park. And this is one of my favorites! Food is excellent and service is always great!
And yes I always buy an order of salsa to take home. 🌶️🌮

It’s official. The first grizzly bear siting of 2023 was March 7th.

🐻 Don’t forget to carry your bear spray when you’re outdoors.
🐻 Never leave food or garbage outdoors unless it is in a bear proof container.

This is one of those moments where you don’t worry about focus of the camera or what’s reflecting through the window. You just take the picture! We have fox around the property and neighborhood regularly. Not typically, however on the deck! And why did this little guy get so brave to come up two flights of stairs? Well, it wasn’t to see what was on the TV. Apparently a neighboring cabin with guests decided to leave their garbage out on their deck rather than put it in the can. It doesn’t take long for our critters to figure out how to find a food source. The garbage problem has been addressed. This guy didn’t find any food on our deck so I doubt he’ll be back this close soon.
Oh, and I’ve named him Joey. A perfect name for our curious little critter.
