Also known as the ‘Phantom of the North’, the great gray owl roams the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.

At only 2.5 pounds, it weighs less than both the great horned owl and snowy owl, but is still considered the largest owl in North America in size.

Despite weighing so little, these powerful predators can break through packed snow to get to rodents. One owl reportedly broke through snow that was dense enough to support an adult human!

Elk graze peacefully on the National Elk Refuge.

Did you know that when you visit Jackson Hole in the winter, you are right next door to an incredible wild elk experience?

Elk migrate down to the refuge every year in December where they stay until April. The number of elk present varies year to year, but we’ve seen numbers as high as 6,000-8,000!

The refuge offers horse drawn sleigh rides that take you right out onto the refuge and amongst the herds. Other animals like coyotes, foxes, bald and golden eagles, and even wolves can be spotted!

Join us on our Best of Yellowstone day tour which includes a sleigh ride on the refuge and see all that the winter wonderland of Jackson Hole has to offer!

Winter is a time of scarcity.

After enjoying the abundance of summer and fall, animals in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem must do what they can to get enough sustenance.

When an animal doesn’t survive winter’s challenges, it gives others a chance to keep going. This ecosystem provides a unique opportunity for us to watch the story of the wild unfold right before our eyes!

Visit this special region and join us at Jackson Hole Wildlife Safaris for some unforgettable wild experiences!

Bighorn sheep are a rarity in the summertime, especially up close. They thrive in high, steep cliff faces that seem impossible to navigate, and these agile athletes make it look easy!

During this time of the year, the deep snow pushes some herds of bighorn sheep down to lower elevations in areas that are accessible to us. We get spectacular, intimate sightings with these animals, great for photos and observing their natural behaviors.

Joining us on a safari, our knowledgeable guides will work to get you the best view, and tell you all of the interesting behaviors they display!

Winter in Yellowstone provides the most spectacular stage for its most interesting and complex predator, the wolf.

With a bright white backdrop, the wolf’s rich coats pop on the landscape! The fur on their paws thicken to act like snowshoes, allowing them easier travel and better opportunities to hunt elk, their main prey. Elk are at a disadvantage in the winter months, so wolf watching is at its best at this time.

Today, January 12, 2025, marks the 30 year anniversary of the reintroduction of the wolf to Yellowstone National Park.

This historic homecoming followed the systematic eradication of the canine from the park and most of their natural range, disrupting the balance of the ecosystem and changing the landscape itself.

Today, the wolf population fluctuates between 90 and 120 individuals, split into several packs across the park’s varied terrain.

Watching a wolf in their natural habitat is an exciting, humbling experience, and a reminder of the importance of wildlife conservation and the protection of our public lands.

Join us on a wildlife safari and give yourself the opportunity to witness these remarkable animals for yourself!

On Wednesday, January 8th, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service rejected petitions by Montana and Wyoming to delist the endangered grizzly bear, reaffirming protected status.

Instead, the federal agency proposed a new approach to grizzly management, including easing some restrictions regarding human conflicts and consolidating grizzlies into a single distinct population.

“This reclassification will facilitate recovery of grizzly bears and provide a stronger foundation for eventual delisting,” said Martha Williams, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Director.

The coyote.

One of the most underrated species in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. These resilient canines are the ultimate survivor- highly adaptable to a myriad of ecosystems from mountains to deserts, and even urban environments.

Like wolves, they live in packs that are a simple family unit. They are monogamous, and both parents raise their young together. They are loyal and loving to each other.

The character of the coyote has often been vilified in many cultures, blamed as a trickster and a thief. Others worshipped the coyote, revering them as “God’s dog”.

Today, their reputation is complex. As humans, we work to put aside our own feelings and prejudice to acknowledge that they play their own vital role in the ecosystem. If anything, they deserve our respect as an enduring force, tirelessly overcoming every challenge thrown their way and findings a way to thrive.

We can learn a lot from the coyote!

Sometimes we can’t believe how fast a year goes by. When time seems to fly, look to the mountains who have stood through millions of years, watching the world go on around them. Another year is but a moment to them.

Remember to slow down and savor your time. In a world where staying busy and hustling is prioritized, make a point to pause and notice the clouds, the flowers, the trees around you and be in the moment every day. In this new year, don’t let it just fly by- live it!

Here at Jackson Hole Wildlife Safaris, we wish you a healthy and happy New Year, and we hope we see you for an adventure!

As winter moves in, one of Yellowstone’s most showstopping species is in their element. The gray wolf excels in the colder months thanks to special adaptations and the elk- their main prey- are at a disadvantage.

One of the best perks of winter is the visibility… on the white snow, the wolves really pop on the landscape and are much easier to spot compared to the summer months amongst the green sagebrush!

Taking a Yellowstone tour in winter is one of the most exhilarating experiences to be had in nature. See the park in its most wondrous form, and watch the wild unfold in front of your eyes!

Ever wonder how moose who roam the frozen landscape in the depths of winter stay warm?

The answer is in their fur! The hair shafts of their coats are hollow, so their body heat warms the air inside them, acting as insulation. It’s like having their own puffy jacket!

These hairs, however, can be delicate, so they shed a lot. Their coats are always regrowing! Because of this, it’s fairly common to find moose hair like this in areas where they hang out.

Keep your eyes peeled the next time you’re in moose country! 🫎

Winter falls on Jackson Hole once more, and the season of magic begins.

A hush falls over the valley while fresh snow glistens on the pine boughs. Animals softly move across the frozen ground, leaving perfect tracks where they passed. Majestic white peaks stoically tower over the landscape, standing guard like winter sentinels.

This is the perfect time for an escape!
