When visiting Yellowstone, you will see some of the most fascinating species you’ll ever encounter- and we don’t mean bears and moose!

Those bright, brilliant colors you see around the hot springs? That is living bacteria! Known as “thermophilic bacteria”, these are heat-loving microbes that thrive in the scalding conditions of Yellowstone’s thermal features.

From vibrant greens and yellows to deep oranges and reds, these microorganisms create the surreal and vivid palettes in places like Grand Prismatic Spring and Fountain Paint Pots.

This bacteria is so abundant that they form what we call “bacterial mats”. These surfaces are very delicate, so be sure to stay on the designated boardwalks to preserve them!

Spring is the time for new life, so keep your eyes peeled!

Elk, moose, bison, and deer give birth in the spring. Elk calves and deer fawns are difficult to spot because they are often hidden away for their own safety.

🦌 Elk and deer are born with virtually no scent- a defensive adaptation to hide from predators sniffing them out. This allows their mother to tuck them away in tall grasses or bushes while they go out to feed. The new birds will barely move a muscle for hours waiting for mom to come back to feed them!

🦬 Moose and bison are different- they are not hidden away, instead they stick right by their mother’s side with their baby fur that is a rusty red/orange color. It is thought that predators can’t see that color well, so it acts as a camouflage. After a couple of months, they begin to shed their lighter coats for their darker adult fur.

If you keep a sharp eye out, you might catch one of the cutest sights of the season!

Today, we honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. As we explore the wild beauty of places like Yellowstone and Grand Teton, we are reminded of the freedoms we enjoy- and the sacrifices that made them possible.

We wish everyone a safe and meaningful Memorial Day from Jackson Hole Wildlife Safaris.

Today is Endangered Species Day! 🌎

Today is a day to reflect on the wildlife we risk losing and strive to protect. Endangered Species Day raises awareness for animals around the world that are struggling to survive, including one of Yellowstone’s most iconic residents: the grizzly bear 🐻

Though grizzlies have made a remarkable comeback, they still face challenges from habitat loss, climate change, and human impact. We continue to provide protections to help preserve their presence in their historic range.

Endangered Species Day is also a day to celebrate the recovery of previously endangered species, such as the gray wolf!

The reintroduction and repopulation of the gray wolf in Yellowstone is one of the greatest conservation successes of all time. Where previously eradicated, we can now experience the iconic howl of a wolf or watch new pups romp outside a den in Yellowstone National Park.

Let’s keep it up and ensure our wildlife is around for many more generations to come!

Grizzly 1063 has reunited with her third cub!

Tragically, on Tuesday morning, two of grizzly 1063’s cubs were found dead. Signs indicated that they were killed by another bear. The third cub was missing.

We are relieved at the news that 1063 has been spotted with the lost cub back at her side. We look forward to watching them continue to serve their vital role in this ecosystem, and hope that they forge ahead to overcome the many challenges that grizzly bears face.

Grizzly 610, daughter of famed grizzly 399, perhaps contemplating duck for dinner. 🦆

It’s not unheard of for a grizzly to dine on duck- in fact the variety of their menu is quite large! Bears have been documented consuming up to 260 different species between plants and animals, ranging in size from the mighty bison to tiny moth larva. Though they are omnivores, 80-90% of their diet comes from vegetation.

Even so, this duck will want to keep his distance.

Things are popping off in Yellowstone for the summer season!

As the park opens its gates and resumed travel to the interior after a long winter, watching geysers erupt feels like a celebration for our return to this wild, volcanic landscape. With over 500 active geysers, there’s no shortage of dazzling displays in the park!

Which Yellowstone geyser is your favorite?
