Used extensively by both the Union and Confederate forces during the Civil War during which the site's Confederate Cemetery was established. Purchased by the State of Louisiana in 1977 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Admission to the site is $4.00 for adults (13-61) with children 12 and under and seniors 62 and above admitted free of charge.
