River City Science Academy (RCSA) is a Tuition Free, Public, Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) focus, Duval County Public Charter School located in Jacksonville. RCSA provides strong academics and college bound programs in addition to after school programs. RCSA is recognized as High Performing Charter School by Florida Department of Education (FLDOE). RCSA was initially granted a f

ive year charter contract from Duval County Public Schools (DCPS) in the fall of 2006. After finding a suitable building site, RCSA opened its doors on the corner of Southside and Beach Blvd on August 2007, serving grades 6th and 7th. As our students were promoted to the next grade level, we continued to add a new grade level every year. We are proud to recognize that our original class graduated in the spring of 2013. In 2009, we opened phase I of our new building at 7565 Beach Blvd to house our 6th and 7th graders. Our 8th and 9th graders remained in the original location until phase II was completed in August of 2010. During this year RCSA applied and were awarded the approval to open RCSA Elementary to serve students in grades K – 5th. RCSA Elementary opened its doors in August of 2010 in the Southside building until phases III and IV could be completed at the new campus on Beach Blvd by August 2012. RCSA Elementary and RCSA Middle-High are now at our single campus at Beach Blvd. In 2012, RCSA applied for and was awarded the approval to open RCSA-Innovation to serve students in grades K-8th. RCSA-Innovation started at the original location on corner of Southside and Beach Blvd, and is currently serving K-2nd. RCSA-Innovation will eventually move into its permanent location when the facility is finalized. RCSA has three charters schools currently in operation and serves the students of Duval County. River City Science Academy has been recognized as one of the top charter schools in Duval County on many occasions by the Superintendent, Board Members, and the charter school office of the Duval County Public Schools since its opening. As a result, we are proud to mention that families of Duval County have chosen RCSA as their school of choice for their children. RCSA was the first charter school in Duval County to receive an “A” grade for two consecutive years as well as making 100% AYP in DCPS charter school history. River City Science Academy earned accreditation from the SACS-CASI, ADVANC-ED accreditation in 2009-10 school year. Since its beginning, with the guidance of the DCPS Charter Office, RCSA has kept up with the current educational trends by becoming more data driven, standards-based, and financially secure, while never losing sight of its innovative and creative vision of the learning process. Learning from our mistakes, we continue to mature and become stronger in all areas of academia and operations moving us forward to meeting all of our goals.

We have gotten multiple inquiries about what to wear for the first day of school. Students must be in dress code attire. If you have not received your uniforms through French toast, students need to wear a solid red or navy blue polo with uniform bottoms.

As forecasters expect Tropical Depression 4 to become Tropical Storm Debby as it nears Florida’s Gulf Coast, all RCSA campus locations (in accordance with Duval County Public Schools) will be closed tomorrow, Monday August 4, with staff and faculty working remotely.

Our Rocket staff, admin, and faculty convened for our annual KickStart celebration event, held this year at the UNF conference center. It was an exciting half day of connections, recognitions, inspiration, and fun.

Along with Dr. T (channeling his inner Freddie), Mr. Sel running the show, and Ms. Laura Palarine as our Emcee, we were joined by Congressman John Rutherford, Sheriff T.K. Waters, Councilman Raul Arias,
Councilman Terrance Freeman, Councilwoman Ju’Coby Pittman and Councilman Chris Miller and DCPS Board Member Cindy Pearson.

Our own Duval County School Board Chair, The Honorable Mr. Darryl Willie, brought down the house with his energy and had the crowd singing.

We were also treated to video messages and letters of encouragement from Washington and Tallahassee from Senator Marco Rubio, Senator Aaron Bean, Senator Rick Scott, and Senator Tracie Davis who couldn’t be with us in person.

RCSA is proud of our integral partnerships with our Jacksonville and Florida elected officials and are so grateful for their long-time and constant support of STEM and charter school education initiatives that have built such a strong foundation for our schools.

Our faculty, staff, and administrators are working hard to get ready for an exciting school year ahead and we look forward to welcoming back your students.

Eight Florida Charter High School Graduates Win Prestigious Scholarships!
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.

Eight Florida charter high school graduates have been named recipients of the 2024 Dr. Carlo Rodriguez Scholarships by the Florida Consortium of Public Charter Schools (FCPCS), including RCSA Middle-High grad Jamie Soljour!

The Dr. Carlo Rodriguez Scholarships are merit-based financial awards of $1,500 each. They are awarded to college-bound or technical school-bound recent graduates of Florida charter schools.

“The Florida Consortium of Public Charter Schools anticipates significant success from the 2024 winners of the Dr. Carlo Rodriguez Scholarships,” said Robert Haag, President of FCPCS. We congratulate them for achieving this excellent honor.”

🎉 **Huge Congratulations to Our Robotics Champions!** 🎉

Two Duval County school robotics teams, including our very own River City Science Academy Mandarin, clinched top honors at the prestigious International SeaPerch Challenge! This invitation-only event has students build underwater robots, compile technical reports, and test their designs' maneuverability and control.

🌟 **Highlights:**
- **174 Teams** from around the globe competed at the University of Maryland.
- **River City Science Academy Mandarin's Team Aquarius** – Justin Duke and Sam Pham – secured **1st place in the high school competition!**
- **Team Ladies in Pink** – Samantha Gude, Avelyn Jones, and Kate Arnold – took home **3rd place** in the mission competition.
- **Mayport Coastal Science Middle School** also excelled, winning the middle school first-place award.

**Coach Janine Aleong** shared, "The SeaPerch Challenge engages students in hands-on STEM education while fostering innovation and teamwork. It encourages hands-on learning, problem-solving, and collaboration among students and promotes career exploration in marine robotics, engineering, and trades."

On land, teams showcase their engineering prowess through technical papers and presentations. In the pool, they navigate their SeaPerch robots through real-world-inspired obstacles. River City Science Academy Mandarin continues to shine, having also won the high school champion award in 2023!

The National Schools of Character program has profoundly impacted over three million students, staff, parents, and community members since its inception. To achieve this honor, schools must meet the rigorous standards of Character.org’s 11 Principles Framework for Schools, assessed by a team of trained evaluators.

This year, only 73 schools nationwide received this prestigious title, with just 2 school systems in Florida among them. 🌟

🎉🚀 RCSA MH Science Olympiad Team Rockets Shine at 2024 National Tournament! 🚀🎉

We are thrilled to announce that the RCSA MH Science Olympiad Team Rockets represented the State of Florida at the 2024 Science Olympiad National Tournament, which took place on May 24-25 at Michigan State University in Lansing, Michigan. This prestigious event is one of the most competitive competitions in the nation, featuring the top 60 teams from around the country. 🌟🏆

The Rockets demonstrated exceptional talent and hard work, earning the following honors:
🥉 3rd place in Ecology - Deshaun H. & Eren D.
🏅 4th place in Mission Possible - Sana A. & Steven E.
🏅 5th place in Wheeled Vehicle - Eren D. & Aeden A.
🏅 8th place in Solar Power - Isaac L. & Umran H.

This marks the fifth time the Rockets have represented Florida at the national level, having previously competed in 2018, 2019, 2022, and 2023. Their consistent performance and dedication are truly commendable. 🌟👏

Senior Walk 2024 👩‍🎓👨‍🎓 Walking through the middle school hallways, our 125 graduating Seniors were cheered on by staff and students from grades 6-8 before exiting through the front office for the last time. Congratulations, Class of 2024! 🎓✨

River City Science Academy is proud of the accomplishments of every one of our Science Olympiad teams across our campuses at the regional and State Science Olympiad Competitions! Middle-High RCSA Rockets placed 2nd overall at State and qualified for the National Science Olympiad tournament, which will be held at Michigan State University on May 24-25, 2024! RCSA Rocketeers placed 5th overall among 42 middle school teams. RCSA RaTs placed 6th overall among 42 high school teams. Mandarin RCSA Mandarin’s Middle School Science Olympiad for earning 3 bronze medals and 14th overall at State. RCSA Mandarin’s Elementary Science Olympiad team won first place at the First Coast Science Olympiad competition. First Place: Roller Coaster, Codebusters, Can’t Judge a Powder, Precision Ping Pong Propulsion, Circuit Lab, and Starry Starry Night. Second Place: Fossil Frenzy, Backyard Biologist, and Metric Mania. Third Place: A is for Anatomy, Balloon Racers, Energy Matters, Experimental Design, Mystery Architecture, and Keyed to Science. This cost-free, one-day event will feature captivating science demonstrations, STEM educators, scientists, interactive experiences, intriguing robotics, community health advocates, medical experts, dedicated community members, fire and police departments, engaging vendor booths, public servants, and much more. Attendees can also look forward to food trucks and a plethora of entertainment.
