When a high school girl voluntarily comes in at 9 o’clock on a Saturday morning to finish testing out of her dyslexia program, you know she has what it takes. Sami’s determination did not only get her to graduation today, but will sustain her in whatever she wants to do. I will miss hearing about her adventures, her dreams and her goals. College campus visits have started and she is all in with excitement and confidence. You are amazing, don’t forget it.

I’m not promoting the purchase of this book. I am promoting the story, and how hard dyslexics work to accomplish what may seem so easy to us.

I could tell you I am fantastic at everything, but I’d be lying.

I just finished recording my audiobook, Be Useful. It comes out October 10. I could tell you how amazing it was to sit down and record my own words, but the truth is, I was absolutely dreading it.

Here’s my secret: I’m a terrible reader. They didn’t talk about learning disabilities in Austria in the 1950s, so most of the time, when I was asked to read out loud in class, it was just a disaster, and I got smacked with a ruler. But now I know that I’m dyslexic.

When I prepare for a movie, I read the script over and over for months until I’ve memorized every line. I need time and reps to get my mind around the words.

They told me authors ready their books in 2 or 3 days at the studio. I asked for the recording equipment at home and told them I’d do 20-30 pages a day. That way I could log in with the director and producer twice a day for shorter sessions and I could practice non-stop in between.

In this process, I used my own lessons.

1. I let myself dread it and complain for a minute, but then I forced myself to get moving, because denial wasn’t going to get it recorded.
2. I did so many reps I couldn’t count. I broke it up into small pieces, knowing that small wins build up into big victories, or in this case, a whole book.
3. I had the help of a fantastic team. My own team, but also the producers and directors Nithya, Danny, and Kris, and Eric who set up the equipment. All of us need help; none of us are self made.

When you listen to the audiobook, I hope you’re inspired, not just by the words, but by the process of recording them. You can pre-order now at BeUsefulBook.com and subscribe to my newsletter if you want stories like this in your inbox at ArnoldsPumpClub.com

Huge shout out to Mason for finishing book 6. Once you get in high school, join sports and get a job,
it takes a real commitment to keep going. Well done, Mason! You really have what it takes.

When someone has a neurotypical child, you feel reasonably assured that class participation and decent study habits will result in good grades. These kids have close friends. They get invited to participate in social things like dances and weekend gatherings. They make the teams, auditions, organizations and clubs.
But when you have a child with certain differences, this is often not the case. Learning may take longer, both academically and socially. Despite their tremendous efforts, results are often a fraction of their peers and social acceptance is fleeting, setting them up for painful comparisons and bitter frustration. Instead of a fun and fulfilling experience, school can become a breeding ground for depression and anxiety, and assignments a battle ground at home. It is exhausting for parent and child alike.
This is the week of SPED (Special Education), Autism, Dyslexia, and ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) awareness.
For all the children who struggle every day to succeed in a world that does not recognize their gifts and talents, and for those who are walking beside them, please let this be a gentle reminder to be kind and accepting of ALL people.
Recognize that the "playing field" is not always a level surface.
Children who learn differently are not weird. They are merely gifted in ways that our society does not value enough. Yet they want what everyone else wants: To be accepted!!
If you choose, please "copy and paste" (by touching and holding the text) onto your profile in honor of all children who are deemed "different".
Our world would be far less beautiful without them.
❤️🧡💛💚💙💜🖤

Never give up

When a student has difficulty reading fluently, we often think we just need to drill, drill, drill fluency. The same can be said for reading comprehension.

While drilling the specific area a student is struggling with will help, it's ultimately a bandaid and not the true solution to the weakness, and our goal as teachers is to find the areas of weakness and eliminate them.

How do we do this? We go back.

The way a student becomes better at rapidly and automatically reading words is by solidifying their understanding of phonics and strengthening their ability to decode.

We become more fluent readers when we are able to rapidly and automatically recognize words.

We become more proficient in understanding what we've read when we've been able to read fluently. (Remember there's a big difference between reading at a slower pace and laboring to read fluently; we're talking about the students that put a lot of effort and brain power into reading fluently.)

Language builds upon itself and we need the layers to all be strong into order for everything to work together.

A lot of people think that using assistive technology is somehow “cheating” but to those of us with a learning difference it’s just a tool we use that helps to level the playing field.

Want to know if something is working or not working? Ask your students! They know when things are helping them and when they're not. Don't ignore their input.
