Today, Dec 7th marks two significant dates. First, according the Hebrew calendar, Jewish people around the world celebrate the first night of Chanukah.
The story of Chanukah began when the Seceluids (part of the Greek Empire), invaded the Land of Israel in 190 BCE. Long story short, as always, those who sought to ruin the Jewish people were overthrown by a small, untrained band of Jewish men, the Maccabees (Macabim). Their small army became 12,000 men in 166BCE lead by General Judah, known as Judah the Maccabee.
They succeeded in overthrowing the enemies and regaining the holy temple. There was only a small bit of untainted oil left needed to for the light in the temple. This oil was thought enough for only one day, but by a miracle, this pure oil lasted 8 days. Therefore we celebrate the miracle of Chanukah for 8 nights and say “Nes Gadol Hya Sham,” a great miracle happened there.
This year, exactly 2 months the ago in October 7th, another enemy, Hamas, sought to destroy Israel and the Jewish people. As always, we will fight for the right of our precious homeland and our people, Am Israel.
During the lighting of the first candle tonight, we all will think about those still held hostage, of all the fallen civilians and more than 90 brave IDF soldiers and to all of the families personally affected by this war of terror.
From our home to yours, Chag Urim Sameach, Happy Chanukah.
