"A trip to the inn would be broken into two parts. First, the ride on the E.T.&W.N.C. railroad from Johnson City, through the Doe River gorge, to Roan Mountain Station. From there, the second part of the trip was by stagecoach, carriage or horseback up the mountain to the inn." - Times-News Online

It’s not Austin, Texas, or Branson, Missouri. It’s not even Nashville, Tennessee.

What would signify a birthplace? Why a birth, of course. You might even call it a big bang. And in terms of country music, it didn’t happen in any one of those cities. But it did happen here. - 365 Atlanta Traveler

The moment we’ve all been waiting for! Warriors' Path State Park annual Winter Persimmon Forecast.

What do you see? Spoons, forks, knives, or plates?

It’s time for our annual PERSIMMON SEED FORECAST! According to East Tennessee tradition, you can forecast the coming winter by looking inside persimmon seeds. Slice open a seed, and check out the embryo tree inside. If it’s shaped like a spoon, then winter will “spoon” lots of snow on you. If the embryo is shaped like a fork or a plate, then winter will be mild enough to take your plate & fork outside for a picnic. And if the persimmon embryo is shaped like a knife, expect cold cutting winds in the coming winter, but not much snow.

These seeds were harvested and cut open just a few minutes ago. Take a close look - do you see spoons, or knives, or forks, or plates?

By the way, if you want to gather some wild persimmons to eat (or to forecast the weather), please remember to only collect a few. Leave most of them for our wildlife neighbors to enjoy.
