Freezing weather is well on its way to Texas so here are some tips on how to protect your property/home from a freeze:

1. Insulate pipes
-unscrew any hoses from outdoor faucets
-turn off outdoor water supplies
-insulate your pipes with foam pipe insulation or heating tape and keep it tightly secured
-insulate your faucet heads with towels or faucet covers and keep it tightly secured

2. Seal leaks
-check for drafts and seal gaps around doors and windows
-seal and gaps with weather stripping or weather seal

3. Service heating system
-make sure your heating system is working properly
-have it checked or serviced to ensure it is in working condition

4. Insulate attics and basements
-ensure proper insulation in attic and basements
-seal any openings or cracks in the foundation

5. Keep cabinets open
-allow warm air to circulate around, plumbing by keeping cabinet doors open, especially those under sinks

6. Maintain a drip
-Allow faucets connected to expose pipes to drip slowly during extremely cold nights to prevent freezing

7. Protect outdoor equipment
-Store outdoor furniture and equipment in a shelter location
-Drain and winterize irrigation systems, swimming pool, lines, and other outdoor water features

8. Know how to shut off water
-familiarize yourself with the location of the main water shut off valve in case of emergencies or going out of town

9. Keep thermostat consistent
-Maintain a consistent temperature inside the home, even if it’s lower than usual, to prevent pipes from freezing
