The Town of Jonesborough is applying for a grant through the Tennessee Department of Environment & Conservation Office of Outdoor Recreation. The Town of Jonesborough Parks & Recreation department will be hosting a Community Input Meeting regarding the First Frontier Trail project on March 21st at 6 p.m. at the Jonesborough Visitors Center!

The proposed project will include the development of a park/trail head at the southwest side of the former Jonesborough Middle School property and 9,500 linear feet of recreation trails. The proposed park/trail head will offer parking, restroom facility, bike skills park, and track. The proposed trails will connect the park/rail head to existing trails at East Main Street and continue along East Main Street to the city limits of Johnson City.

In addition, connector trails would be constructed from Spring Street to Scott Lane and May Drive from W College St to the trails being constructed at Saylor’s Place, creating a connector to Tiger Park. Our hearts are heavy about the passing of Jimmy Neil Smith, former mayor of Jonesborough and founder and president emeritus of the International Storytelling Center.

"As a teacher, a journalist, and a community leader, he recognized the power of storytelling to help people work better and live more meaningful lives. His stewardship of the art form would go on to inform and inspire not just other festivals across the nation, but also the work of influential organizations like StoryCorps and the Moth." -International Storytelling Center

The International Storytelling Center is saddened to announce the passing of our founder and president emeritus Jimmy Neil Smith, who died on Saturday, March 15 after a long illness.

Jimmy Neil was a visionary — “a country boy with a dream,” in his words — who organized the folk-art revival of storytelling in the twentieth century. By creating the National Storytelling Festival and, later, the parent organization that would become the International Storytelling Center, he changed the face of the arts in the United States.
