A pod of Killer Whales came through Juneau this afternoon! These creatures are magnificently powerful and swift, traveling up to 99 miles in one day! Due to how quickly they travel, it isn't very often that we get to enjoy the presence of these spectacular animals.

“Flame was named by the whale-watching community and is one of the most frequently observed whales in Juneau… As a juvenile, she was first documented in 2004 by the University of Alaska Southeast as part of a broad collaborative study… Most mature female humpback whales have calves only once every 2–4 years, although occasionally humpback whales will calve 2 years in a row. But Flame surpassed that by bringing 4 consecutive calves back to Alaska: Bunsen in 2019, Smoke in 2020, Bolt in 2021, and Cinder in 2022.” Read more about the study and about Flame’s life at: https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/feature-story/flame-juneau-alaskas-wildlife-superstar. October 25th… the latest (and coldest) we have ever operated. It was an amazing year, with a great crew and fantastic wildlife. Looking forward to getting some projects done this offseason and before too long we will be starting up again as we welcome the first ship next spring on April 8th!
