A renowned Tlingit artist, Nathan Jackson is celebrated among Alaska Native communities and across the nation for his mastery of Northwest Coast artistic traditions and his dedication to teaching his art to the next generation.

He was born into the Sockeye Clan on the Raven side of the Chilkoot-Tlingit tribe in southeastern Alaska and worked for many years as a fisherman. His clan uncle and grandfather instilled in him a love of tribal traditions and ways of life. Art is an integral part of the Tlingit social system, and an accomplished artist must know the meaning of tribal symbols and stories, clan history, and social customs. Jackson is esteemed for the vast store of traditional knowledge that shapes and informs his work.

“I try to do things that are what the old-timers would have done,” he says.

His impressive range of artistic creations includes masks, canoes, carved doors, wood panel clan crests, and more than fifty totem poles, one of which he crafted in honor of the opening of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian in 2004.

Winter is coming! Let’s ski/board Eaglecrest! ⛷️

If you thought it was feeling chillier than usual for an October day, you aren't alone! The cold weather across the panhandle overnight saw temperatures plummeting in many locations to well below normal. Juneau Airport broke its daily low temperature record - previously set back in 1961, while Sitka saw its daily low temperature record tied.

Winter is a beautiful time to visit Juneau! Skiing, snowshoe, hikes, and a vibrant downtown.

Juneau is starting to look like a winter wonderland!
We are expecting snow showers through the morning before we begin to dry out into Sunday.
