Today's whale watch was absolutely magical! It goes with out saying but seeing orca is a 50/50 chance (of curse you increase those odds if you are on a boat 😆) We were fortunate to witness two incredible sights - a pod of majestic orcas swimming gracefully through the waves, and a heartwarming moment as a mama humpback whale and her adorable baby delighted us by shooting rainbows out of their blowholes. Nature truly knows how to captivate us with its beauty and wonders! 🌊✨🌈

Happy Mothers Day!

Today we want to celebrate all mothers, including this humpback whale named Flame who is a remarkable mom!

Flame is a whale familiar to whale watchers and scientists in both Juneau, AK and Hawaii where she spends her summers and winters respectively.

Humpback whales will typically have calves every 2-4 years, a pattern which Flame followed for her first few calves. She gave birth to Spark in 2013, Ember in 2016, and Bunsen in 2019. Notably however, she began having a calf a year from 2019 - 2022, giving birth to Smoke, Bolt, and Cinder in the subsequent years.

This year, Flame has also been spotted with another calf near Juneau!

Aside from humpback whales that come to feed on Juneau’s nutrient-rich waters, you might also get to feast your eyes on harbor seals, sea lions, porpoises, and otters. Bald eagles and other myriad birdlife soaring overhead also populate our skies so don’t forget to look up. Sometimes, black bears can be seen when the salmon are running too.
