Kootéeyaa Deiyí

SHI’s dedication ceremony for the first 12 poles of Kootéeyaa Deiyí (Totem Pole Trail) and Faces of Alaska is happening now! Watch our livestream coverage here: tinyurl.com/2p8xe22y

The L’eeneidí Pole is now being dedicated by spokesperson Fran Houston. The pole was carved by Tlingit artist Robert Mills of Kake with apprentice Larry Jackson.

The L’eeneidí clan are of the Raven moiety. Their name derives from Teel’ Héeni (Dog Salmon Stream). The designs on the L’eeneidí totem pole include four of their crests. It also depicts a L’eeneidí clan member. One of the designs features Raven with the Box of Daylight. According to oral tradition, Raven opened the Box of Daylight and released the Sun, bringing daylight to the world. Another design features a Star, which derives from one of their clan houses known as “Little Dipper House.” The totem pole also includes a Dog Salmon and Lucky Lady, which were obtained through supernatural encounters.

Some perspective on the Mendenhall glacier changes

Juneau resident James Wycoff noticed on his regular walks to Nugget Falls that the face of the glacier seemed to be retreating faster this year than he’s ever seen before.

Ice climbing on the X-trek

This season, we will again be offering our longest and most adventurous glacier excursion- the Extended Helicopter Glacier Trek. With 3 full hours on the ice, there is ample time to explore the glacier’s more remote areas and view exciting features roaring moulins, gaping crevasses, and winding crystal-blue rivers and pools. Participants also have the opportunity to scale an ice wall using ice-climbing techniques taught by expert guides.
