Totem poles hold a special place in the history and culture of Ketchikan, Alaska. The tradition of totem pole carving in the area dates back centuries and is deeply rooted in the practices of indigenous Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian peoples. Totem pole carving is done by using traditional hand carving tools like the ones seen here with our Master Carver, Kevin. Some examples of these tools are sharpened curved knives ranging from small sizes to larger size, as well as a variety of Adzes carving tools for larger carving areas!

Adventurers, meet Kevin!! ☺️
Kevin Clevenger, also known as Nanum gaax di waayu meaning Mischievous Raven in the Tsimshian Native culture, is originally from Metlakatla, Alaska, and currently lives in Ketchikan. He is a member of the Tsimshian tribe and the Raven clan, and is known for his skills as an artist and carver. Kevin honed his craft through an 8-year apprenticeship with his uncle and mentor, Wayne Hewson, and has since created three solo totem poles. You can see these totem poles, and meet Kevin at our Alaska Rainforest Sanctuary! 🤩🌲

Bears are excellent tree climbers despite their large size and weight! They climb trees to escape danger, search for food, or even take a nap in a safe place 💤 Most black bears can climb trees at a speed of up to 30 feet per second! 😮🌲

If you've ever been to our Alaska Rainforest Sanctuary location, you have probably seen our Tsimshian Totem poles! Totem poles are a significant part of the Tsimshian heritage. Each totem pole tells a story or represents a family's history, lineage, or important events. The designs and figures on totem poles often include animals, mythical creatures, and symbols that hold cultural and spiritual meanings for the Tsimshian people 🌲

Last week we had the honor of celebrating the raising of our new totem pole, The Origins of Raven; crafted by Tsimshian Master Carver, Kevin Clevenger.🌲🪵🎉 This ceremony was an amazing experience for all of our staff, partners, friends, and family to not only come together in celebrating Kevin and the beautifully crafted totem pole, but to also learn more about and engage in Alaska Native Culture. We had so much fun hearing the story of this pole, learning more about Tsimshian traditions and language, and even participating in gathering songs and dance! Thank you so much to Kevin and his family for sharing this unforgettable experience with us, and thank you all who came to learn and celebrate!
