A Trip South

A Trip South In June 2012 a group of Alaskans departed from Juneau, AK in kayaks and paddled to Ladysmith Harbor on Vancouver Island, BC.

Part of the group has traded their kayaks for bikes and is following the Pacific coast to the southern tip of South America.

At the premiere event of the final feature on August 3rd at the Gold Town Nickelodeon theater in Juneau, we asked the audience to write a few words describing what the film was about. Here are a few of the favorite submissions:

“Stunning visual portrayal of a soul-searching trip that explored the vast extent of human experiences.”

“Fostering a sustainable and meaningful relationship with your home is vital to its longevity.”

“The role of ethnicity in ecological/sustainable development.”

“Reconnecting with a natural lifestyle expressed through many cultures.”

“Having a home, traveling from it with a sense of purpose, and open eyes, ears, and minds.”

“Adventure – inspiration – full hearts - connection”

“Beauty – travel – humanity – craftsmanship”

“Culture & traditions matter- culture + technology can coexist.”

“Discovering culture at a human pace.”

“Help you take an introspective look on your own role in this world.”

“The ways people subsist in the America’s; and some of the ways you can weave in and out of their lifestyles.”

“The land and ocean/rivers provide. Local people have adapted and innovated to exist in their environment. All want to preserve the value of their culture and relationship to the environment. Everyone has knowledge to share.”

The ATripSouth video, VivoAquí: Local Living in the Americas will be showing in Juneau at the Gold Town Nickelodeon Theater on August 3, 2018 for First Friday. There will be showings at 4, 5, and 6 pm. The film is 22 minutes in duration and will feature some of the best bits of wisdom that we found in our two years of traveling along the west side of North, Central and South America.

Vivo Aquí is intentionally broad and open to viewer interpretation. We made a film that contrasts the typical "adventure narrative" genre. The goal was to let the people we encountered speak for themselves, with minimal distraction by our own personal narratives. The "take home message" of this project may be different for every viewer.

Check out www.atripsouth.com or explore our YouTube channel to watch the 6-episode webseries. And come to the Gold Town Nickelodeon Theater on August 3 to see the final product! I will post the 22 minute film online after August 3. Until then, here's a tasty little appetizer:

https://youtu.be/CliWXoAoy6w

Kake, Alaska was the first town we stopped at on the journey. Mike Jackson was the very first person that we interviewed for the project. His thoughtful words confirmed confidence in our goal and inspired the trajectory for the rest of the project.

See you August 3rd at 4, 5, or 6 pm. Tell your friends!

Check it out! The series is done!

Though the mileage through southern Patagonia was relatively short, the time spent was long and the experiences were among the richest. We met some incredible people and immersed in some powerful places down at the southern corner of the world.

ATripSouth was a blast! Thanks for all your support over the years.

This is the last of them:

For those of you in Juneau, I will likely do a showing some time to share all these videos rolled together into one. Stay tuned.

Thanks again!

¡Mira!

This video is just a small sampling, but highlights a few beautiful scenes from over 5 months on the road.
Local water in Sajama, Bolivia and local crafting in Cucao, Chile are the focus segments in this episode.

ATripSouth found beauty in the United States of America and México

https://youtu.be/_100cf9G5f8

Episode 2 of 6 of the Vivo Aquí film series of ATripSouth.

This episode shows our first six months of bicycling, after finishing the kayak leg of the journey. En route to South America, we stuck to the west coast of the USA and Mexico while visiting unique demonstrations of localization along the way.

This episode showcases Local Transportation in Waldport, Oregon, Local Permaculture in Ojai, California, and Local Immersion at Rancho el Sagrado, Oaxaca. Cutting down six months into ten minutes left many stories out, but these three examples were the strongest that we documented on this first portion of biking.

Welcome to episode 1 of 7 of Vivo Aquí, the webseries of ATripSouth.

This first (and longest) episode shows the first three months of a two-year journey from Alaska to Argentina. In this episode, we kayak from our home in Juneau down the Inside Passage of Southeast Alaska and Western British Columbia.

Though we found many impressive examples of localized living throughout the kayak trip, this video focuses on Local Language in Kake, Alaska, and Local Harvesting in Hartley Bay, BC. We had to edit and select a very small slice of the pie to visually represent this journey but would like to give a huge THANK YOU to everyone who helped us along the way and participated in this film project.

Greetings friends

On June 1st it will be 4 years since we pushed off from Sandy Beach in our kayaks on a trip south.

Just this past week I finished the gigantic (years-long) task of reviewing all the footage from the trip and picking out the decent shots. I am now officially in the next phase of the editing process.

To celebrate, I'm sharing a short edit that I made over a year ago for a Cycle Alaska Adventure Cycling slideshow. It never really made the rounds on the internet, so now seems like a good time to redistribute it.

https://vimeo.com/154254174

Steve Sprinkel invited us to help harvest his vegetables for the weekly Community Supported Agriculture boxes that individuals in Ojai subscribe to. By sharing in a bit of farm labor, we got to learn more about his organic Rancho Del Pueblo Farm, capture some great footage, take home a box of produce, and eat lunch at his restaurant, The Farmer and The Cook. It was an exceptional experience and a great taste of the organic food network in Southern California.

Jack Surmani and Suzanne Guerra were members of the community grange #499 in Freshwater, California. After enjoying the monthly pancake breakfast at the grange, we connected with Jack and Suzanne to learn more about the value of local food production, community gathering spaces, and traditions. Humboldt County was a great place to find strong examples of localization for our video project.

That's all for now.

This is a small piece of an incredible interview with Cam Hill, a community leader in the village of Hartley Bay, British Columbia. Canadian fossil fuels development pressures have proposed the Northern Gateway Pipeline project to export tar sands bitumen from Alberta to the world.

"Enbridge's Northern Gateway Pipeline would cross more than 800 streams and rivers, including sensitive salmon spawning habitat in the upper Fraser, Skeena, and Kitimat watersheds. It would also bring more than 225 oil tankers, including supertankers, to B.C.'s North Coast for the first time ever. Here, an oil tanker spill would damage the famous Great Bear Rainforest, home to the iconic Spirit Bear." And home to Cam Hill and the Gitga’at Nation.

This is one of the many clear examples we found and documented on ATripSouth that pulling more fossil fuels out of the ground is the opposite direction that we should be going right now. for solutions to climate change!
