Good day from the Prairie House!
The tree peonies had a brief but glorious bloom time and the prairie is greening up nicely after the spring burn. We’re having a late spring and the kitchen garden’s slowly getting established. Spied a newborn fawn on wobbly legs in the prairie the other day and we’re happy to see the eagles back at the nest after losing their eaglets last February.
Best spring wishes!

Best fall wishes!
We’ve had some gentle rains and cooler temps here in Dodge County and I was headed out to hunt for maitake mushrooms aka hen of the woods, and came across this shaggy-looking mushroom that appears to be what’s called “Shaggy Mane” or “lawyer’s wig”, (Latin name: Coprinus comatus).
Wanting to be 100% sure this was the edible gourmet mushroom Shaggy Mane rather than a poisonous look-a-like I left it alone to research further. When I stepped out the next morning into the wet grass it appeared that a deer had eaten them and another kind of mushroom had popped up?
So I returned to look up the new mushroom and learned that the Shaggy Mane has a fascinating manner of dispersing it’s spores called “deliquescence” - it auto-digests its cap starting from the bottom up curling into an inky mass leaving the flattened cap within a few hours!
So you don’t want to pick this one too late or when you put it in the refrigerator it will turn into an inky puddle. There’s a cool time lapse video of this process for those who want to learn more.

This beauty was so intent on getting nectar from every flower on the rosinweed plant she didn’t seem to mind my taking a few photos. The female black swallowtails tend to be larger than the males with blue markings on the back, and males have yellow markings! The underwing is more colorfully marked with yellow, blue and orange. Unlike the monarch, they don’t migrate but instead overwinter here in Wisconsin in the chrysalis form that resembles a dried leaf. Their favorite plants are in the carrot family - dill, parsley and queen Ann’s lace (wild carrot).

Hope you enjoy this virtual mid-summer prairie walk. There were 139 species of prairie forbs and grasses planted in 1999 and we’ve identified about 85:

Wishing you a great summer from the Prairie House!
This thistle photo was taken at the rhubarb festival at the Art Farm near Holy Hill in the town of Erin last weekend. We have one rhubarb plant in the Prairie House garden and we learned some tips on how to make strawberry/rhubarb salsa.
Thistles are prickly and one good thing about them is that they’re a favorite food for goldfinches.
We hiked around the farm fields and sampled strawberry/rhubarb jelly and rhubarb wine and listened to the Seigmann Family Band play bluegrass/gospel music. This was a first visit to the art farm and we recommend stopping in at their beautiful farm tucked away in the hills of Erin overlooking Holy Hill. Their events are listed at www.Holyhillartfarm.com

Wisconsin spring is finally in full swing - wishing you joy amidst the busy spring season!

“Come with me into the woods where spring is
advancing, as it does, no matter what,
not being singular or particular, but one
of the forever gifts, and certainly visible.”

Happy Mother’s Day from the Prairie House! Erin captured the photo of the baby sandhill crossing the road - the other baby was dawdling behind in the grass. . .what’s a mom to do?
The spring songbirds are nesting around the farm - a purple finch family has taken over the wreath on the front door. With gratitude for the miracle of birth and our innate capacity to nurture, mentor and care for others, the world, ourselves💖🌎.

It’s a lovely spring day at the Prairie House - Blessed Easter to all who celebrate!
It’s a joy to see the daffodils finally blooming today and the prairie starting to green up after the recent prairie burn. The garden seedlings started 2 weeks ago are coming along - heirloom tomatoes, roasting peppers and eggplant at this point. We’ll plant the cool weather lettuce, spinach, kale and peas outdoors this week and look forward to May when the spring tulips, lilacs and asparagus are blooming.
Wishing you a healthy and joyous spring from the Prairie House!

Wishing you health and joy on this spring equinox day!
We had a window of perfect winds for a much needed prairie burn this morning. We try to burn a third of the 18 acre prairie every 3 years. It’s never a given that it will go smoothly even though Larry seems to have it down to a science and we’re grateful for the friends who came out to make it happen like clockwork. Our team this year consisted of Larry, Erin, Laurie, Josh, Ken, Rick and Sue - thank you!!
It’s a relief to have that behind us - it took about 1.5 hours in all. The back fire was slow to light as there was a bit of morning frost and the ground warmed up pretty quickly so that the head fire swept through in a flash. In a month the prairie will be greened up and abuzz with nesting birds et al.
Controlled prairie burns have been a strategy for prairie maintenance for thousands of years. In the Midwest the Native American tribes of the Plains burned the prairie to discourage tree growth and encourage new growth of grasses to attract bison and establish prairie and oak savanna. While bison no longer roam wild (there are bison raised on farms in the area) we love that the prairie is a haven for native plants, birds, butterflies, and other beneficial wildlife. The deep-rooted prairie plants restore the soil on this former farm and serve as an excellent buffer strip between maintained turf and adjacent lake. We wish you an excellent spring!

Larry and Erin captured the photo of the female bald eagle tending her nest on Eagle Island. Both the male and female take turns incubating the eggs. They lay their eggs in the freezing cold in late February and it takes about 35 days for the eaglets to hatch.
This will be the 21st season the bald eagles have returned to nest on the east bay of Lake Sinissippi and it’s always a joy to see them! They’ve raised 2-3 eaglets each year and have made a great comeback across the country since they were removed from the endangered species list in 2007.
It’s been an exceptional winter in southeast Wisconsin for outdoor sports with an abundance of thick powdery snow. The last Prairie House group had a wonderful time exploring the woods on cross-country skis and left a nicely packed trail for others to enjoy.
We still have Prairie House openings in May and Mother’s Day is a lovely week to visit with lilacs and tulips in bloom, eaglets in the nest, migrating song birds, asparagus in the gardens and the ever-elusive morels in the woods.
Every best wish for your health and happiness as winter rounds the corner into spring wherever you may be.
