pe the cruise ship shore excursion crowds and enjoy unique sights of Kahului and the surrounding area! Enjoy a fun cruiser style bike ride down Haleakala Volcano paved roads...downhill with little to no peddling involved! Even an option for those in your group that do not ride to follow behind in the support van! Departing from just across the street for the cruise ship port, you will travel to the summit area of Maui's dramatic Mount Haleakala Volcano which towers more than 10,000 feet above the island's East coast. During the approximate one hour drive to the park, you will pass through small towns and countryside. The ancient dormant volcano is located in the Haleakala National Park. With the early morning start, you will get to see some of the local resident birds and lush vegetation along with the spectacular views. By vehicle, the climb up to the summit area takes approximately 45 minutes. As your vehicle climb, the view are astonishing and it is not unusual to drive right through the clouds until you reach the crater's rim. Upon arrival at the summit area, you will have the opportunity to view the unique ancient lava fields of multi colors that strangely resemble the surface of the moon. Your professional guides will then take you to the bike staging area to go over the equipment and the use of the hand-operated brakes. There will be beverages and a muffin available before you begin your fun adventure. The bikes have ergonomic seats, wide "bullhorn" style handlebars and fat tires to make your biking experience enjoyable. You will be fitted to a bike for a comfortable ride. After buckling your helmet, it is time to head down the road. Note that the temperatures at the top will be much cooler; as you head downhill, they will get warmer. Your biking leader will start you off, leading you on your downhill adventure. The support chase van will bring up the rear and both staff are in constant contact via radio. For the next approximately 2.5 - 3 hours, you will travel much further than most of the other bike excursions as you will coast down more than 35 miles of paved road, through more than 200 twists and turns offering countless visual rewards. Several stops will be taken along the way for photos or to just take it all in. Your guide will also offer some of the dormant volcano's history and lore. There is really little peddling involved as gravity does most of the work! Just about anyone who is comfortable on a bike and is reasonably fit can do this ride. A stop will be made for guests to purchase lunch at a local restaurant before making the one hour drive back to your cruise pier in Kahului. Please note: Due to security requirements, wait times are expected at the National Park entrance. We appreciate your patience as this is out of our control. Guests choosing not to bike down after signing up for a bike, may ride along in the van but there will be no discount or refund.
