01/29/2025

National Weather Service (NWS) in Honolulu issued a Flood Watch and High Wind Watch for Maui County and all Hawaiian Islands, which go into effect this evening, Jan. 29, 2025, until Friday morning.
Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall and damaging winds are predicted to occur due to a strong winter low-pressure system moving across the state, according to NWS. The weather service recommends taking steps to prepare.
The watches mean that strong and potentially damaging conditions are expected but not yet occurring. Warnings mean that the conditions are imminent or already happening.
With the Flood Watch, flood-prone roads and other low-lying areas may be closed due to elevated runoff and overflowing streams. Urban areas may receive more significant flooding and property damage due to rapid runoff, NWS said.
With the High Wind Watch, damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines. Southwest winds of 20 to 35 mph with gusts up to 55 mph are possible. Widespread power outages are possible. Travel will be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles.
NWS said to take precautions now to protect property. Tie down loose objects or move them to a sheltered location. Also, monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should warnings be issued.
A strong winter low-pressure system is developing west of the state today and passing north of Kauaʻi on Thursday, with the associated cold front moving eastward across the state Thursday into Friday. Heavy showers and possible thunderstorms over the western end of the state are predicted starting Wednesday evening, then progressing east on Thursday and continuing through Friday morning.
