Did you know spinner dolphins often spin to rid themselves of remora fish? If you look closely this spinner dolphin has a remora suctioned onto its underside between its pectoral fins! The intense centrifugal force as well as hitting the surface of the water when landing is how the dolphins will rid themselves of these pests!

This morning’s 7 am whale watch was one for the books! We encountered five different cetacean species, an oceanic white tip shark and some turtles! Not only did we have this beautiful mom calf and escort trio accompanied by some fantastic vocals over our hydrophone but we encountered a number of other humpback whales, short finned pilot whales, Hawaiian spinner dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, and rough toothed dolphins! This level of biodiversity in just one trip with several encounters being multi species interactions is one of the many things that makes Kona so truly special! Thank you to everyone who joined us this morning for such an epic tour! 🎥 @livfortheocean Cover 📸 @andrew.aggergaard #humpbackwhale #humpbackwhales #pilotwhale #dolphins #bottlenosedolphin #spinnerdolphins🐬 #🐬 #🐋 #roughtootheddolphin #shark #hawaii #whalewatching
Like mother like baby! This adorable duo gave a us a dramatic look at their size difference when they surfaced together! When born, a humpback calf is around 10-15 ft long. Mom on the other hand, can be upward of 45 ft! Just look at the size of those flukes 🤩 🎥 Footage from Naturalist Kelsi

Melon-headed whales on our dolphin and whale watch! Melon-headed whales have a dolphin-like body with a rounded melon shaped head. A fitting name for this pelagic species! We encountered a massive group of these whales on our trip, and we’ve been seeing a number of other whales, including humpbacks, on our recent adventures!🎥 Footage by Naturalist Sam

Offshore on Artemis with short-finned pilot whales! The humpbacks are starting to arrive, but Kona’s year-round whales will always have our 🩵
As a year-round species, we expect to see a good amount of pilot whale activity in the coming months, and maybe a repeat of last year’s joint pilot whale and humpback encounters!

Bottlenose bubbles! Lucky guests on our dolphin and whale watching trip watched this bottlenose dolphin blow some beautiful bubbles! 🐬
This week we encountered so many fun species! Our highlight was a massive pod of melon-headed whales offshore! This pelagic group of whales was traveling in around 8000 ft of water, and a few gave us some incredible looks as they rode our bow and wake! 🎥 Footage from Serena (HA crew)
