A big storm last week left the shoreline murky from runoff and we encountered spinner dolphins cruising through the murky water and debris on the surface. Seemingly unbothered by the less than desirable conditions compared to the crystal clear water they are used to.

Species Saturday 🐳

This week we would like to share the largest toothed predator on the planet! The s***m whale! While typically whales have a blow hole(s) centered on the back of their head the s***m whale’s is located on the front of their head and off to the left side like you can see in these photos! We’re looking forward to our next encounter with these massive whales!

Bottlenose are a species that we often see covered in rake marks. Shown well in these photos rake marks are all of the scratches you can see on the dolphins. These marks are from the teeth of other dolphins from various social interactions.

Species Saturday!

This week we would like the highlight another bird species! The Nazca B***y. This species looks very similar to the masked b***y, one way to tell these species apart is by the coloration of their beak! The more orange coloration is characteristic of the nazca b***y!

Did you know every pilot whale is identified by its unique dorsal fin? The shape is slightly different with each animal but unique scars and inquires throughout their life make them even easier to track. This is how we are able to identify the pods we are viewing when we come across them on!

Here in Hawaii we have two different populations of bottlenose, pelagic/offshore bottlenose and inshore/coastal bottlenose! The offshore population is very uncommonly encountered, the inshore population however can often be found cruising the coastline like we did the other day! We had a wonderful encounter with a large pod of bottlenose dolphins including several new calves!
