We recently planted gardenias at Schofield's Keauhou Bay Vacation Rental. Yesterday, they bloomed for the first time, three of the 7. The scent is amazing! We can smell them all around the yard. We've worked hard to make significant improvements over the past few weeks. You will not be disappointed. Bookings will open soon, so get ready to make the trip to Kona!

Getting ready to go on a hunt for turtles. The surf is still really high which likely means no swimming, but we can still hang on the beach and watch the waves and see about some turtles.

I have spent most of today listening/watching the Hawaii County Council review their new regulations on Short Term Vacation Rentals. There was overwhelming public testimony (4.5 hours) asking the Council to trash their proposal. Lots of reasons... then the Council reviewed their bill line by line... which is where we are now. I've read it all, I've listened to it all. My take - these people have to much time on their hands. With serious situations like mental health matters, substance misuse matters, homeless matters, those should be the priority before we start talking about assessing Grandma at $10K fine for renting a room to a college student without a permit. It is likely a hotel/resort lobbyist matter. Either way... Hawaii is a beautiful place and a wonderful vacation destination, but you must abide by the constitution and the people's rights. They have a long ways to go before this ever comes to fruition...

Lots of things happening at this house! We have an all new paved driveway that looks like lava flow! Great contractors to work with and we love the final result. Along with general maintenance, we are also updating the carport and outdoor grilling area. Carpet cleaning, painting and new plants. We'll be ready to open the rental schedule in the next few weeks. We so appreciate your patience while we take this time to freshen up this beautiful place.

Today, November 17 the makaliʻi (Pleiades) constellation will rise in the night sky over the Hawaiian Islands, indicating the start of Makahiki. Makahiki marks the Hawaiian new year and the change of seasons. The kapu (taboo) on war began and the time of feasting, resting, competition, and ceremonies began. The season is one of thanks to the god Lono who brought prosperity to the land and is associated with fertility, agriculture, rainfall, music, and peace. Hawaiian moʻolelo tells that Lono travels from Kahiki (ancient homeland) to the Hawaiian Islands at the start of the ho‘oilo (wet season) for Makahiki.

Ed and I (owners) are on island now for annual repairs and maintenance. It's always interesting to see what folks love or not about our home. Forks are always missing (guessing they went to the beach and were thrown away), glassware broken (accidents happen) and carpets stained. It's all part of the wear and tear of having guests in our home. While here, we'll clean carpets, replace dinnerware, glassware and bath mats. We'll paint, plant and hang new pictures. We want you to love being here and hope that you will consider this home for your Big Island adventure. And we hope you will care for it like it was yours.
