Hauʻoli lā hānau e Princess Kaʻiulani!

On this day in 1875, Princess Victoria Kaʻiulani was born. Niece of King Kalākaua and Queen Liliʻuokalani, and daughter of Princess Miriam Likelike and Archibald Cleghorn, she was a cherished member of the Hawaiian monarchy.

Kaʻiulani spent her childhood at her beloved ʻĀinahau estate in Waikīkī, gifted to her by her godmother, Princess Ruth Keʻelikōlani. At the age of twelve, she left Hawaiʻi to further her education at Harrowden Hall in England. Though she was expected to return after one year, circumstances kept her abroad until October 1897.

Named heir to the throne when her aunt ascended as queen in 1891, Kaʻiulani remained a beacon of hope for the Hawaiian Kingdom. In 1898, she celebrated her 23rd birthday in Honolulu, a poignant occasion that would be her last. As it fell on a Sunday, her birthday reception for Native Hawaiians was held the following day, with the public invited to pay their respects soon after. Less than six months later, in March 1899, the Kingdom mourned her untimely passing.

While hula is emblematic of Hawai‘i, it is far less known that puppetry is a tradition within the world-famous form of dance.

It's been brought to our attention that American Ghost Walks out of Minnesota has started offering ghost tours in Kailua Kona and Hilo. We are NOT affiliated with them, even though they are using our name on their website. Beware of these scammers!
