Yoshiro and Mari finished up strong with a great last 2 days we raised 2 double header blues all perfect size for fly fishing. One the second double the fish were so hot that at the last second one grabbed the teaser as it was headed to eat the fly. It opened its mouth to eat the fly and finally let go of the teaser. Wild! Yoshiro fought that one for about 10 minutes before we pulled the hook. Early afternoon we raised a 140 pounder that didn’t switch. Boys did a great job but the fish didn’t find the fly. Late in the day Mari had a spear on one of 16 pound tippet that we lost after a few seconds. They hooked a slam while here on fly making a fun tri. We are going to try our hooks next trip and pray the fishing are biting again.

Yoshiro Saito and Mari Kitagawa from Japan have been here fly fishing. After a slow day one we had a good day yesterday. We were trolling in a school of aku and had big marks under them. Turned out to be big ahi and one blew up on the left teaser twice. Sickened by that having no hooks out we worked the area and switched a double header stripey to Mari’s fly. After a few second run it came off. This picture is of everyone waiting for what turned out to be a big ahi.

Roy Cronacher finished up yesterday with an action packed day. Had a small blue switch to the 8 lb on a double header. The smaller of the 2 bit and were off to the races. Our battle was short lived as the fish just went warp speed which was too much for the 8 lb. Not long later we found another doubleheader and the smaller of the 2 bit and again Roy was hooked up 12 this time. Unfortunately it looked like the fish bit in front of the fly and after a great set of jumps it was gone. Had a few blow ups that didn’t tease in and a few mahi bites to finish our day. Our conversion this week was very good. and switched 2-3 on spears 1-2 on stripes and 3-4 on blues. Many times we struggle with conversion mostly because the fish won’t come in. The few that didn’t switch were in range which made it a great week. Releasing a slam on the way to Roy’s 5th complete fly caught royal slam. .org

Roy Cronacher completed caught his 5th short billed spearfish on 8 pound tippet today on the Northern Lights. This one was the first of 3 that we saw today. We caught this one first, had another that didn’t switch and had a big one hooked up that late in the day that got away. We had a striped marlin in the mix that we didn’t get to switch. Nice to have the shots. Looking forward to tomorrow.

Wrapping up our Cabo season of pre fishing and tournaments. Tough conditions to overcome with green water, storms, and hurricanes effecting the fishing. Was a pleasure to be part of a first class team once again on Team True Grit. We fished well and a had a smooth season working really well together. Big thanks to Jim Jeana and Tommy for having me back again this season and to Mitchell and Rey for all the hard work they put in with me in the cockpit. Already thinking about next season and what we can do to start practicing at home for next season. Time to get home to Kona for a little fishing, a few hunts to guide and dry dock. Big thanks to my Cabo team and Cabo friends thank you for the hospitality. Great to see you all. Until next year catch em up

TART 30 in the books!! As always we had a great time with the guys in a really close tournament for the boats and the anglers. We trailed in 2 nd all week after a great start with 2 blues and a nice ahi on the first day. We missed a blue on day 2 and weighed a 388 on day 3. Day four we had a chance to go into the lead and pulled the hook right at the boat. With 3 of us going into day 5 essentially tied BC on the Sea Genie went into first with 2 tags and we trailed in 3rd behind Jeff Fay on the Humdinger. With 9 minutes left we finally got our shot to move up to second and jumped off the fish. We all were ready to clear lines coming up to 4:00 stop fishing and the short bait disappeared in a giant hole and the reel screamed through the call of stop fishing. The judges allowed the hook up and we chased down the fish. We agreed it would be over 400 pounds which would put us in First. We took it easy as the camera boat approached and we got ready to take the fish when the hook pulled. What a way to finish. Good fun

Great couple days with my friends. We had tough fishing which eventually happens as much as we fish. Ray Diez has had some the biggest days I have had here in the past so many times in a row. The odds of fishing finally caught up to us. The fishing means a lot but the friendship even more so we had a great time. We marked a ton of fish that wouldn’t bite. Frustrated

Nice week with Bob and Sally Kurz during the HIBT. After the last minute cancellation of the tournament and limited teams expected we made sure we were fishing this year and the Kurz use their plane tickets etc. We were wishing we were in the tournament once it was confirmed it was on. Please show your support and get in the tournament early for next year. It is a great event that put Kona fishing on the world map.

Got a nice ahi in the Isemoto Tournament after stop fishing. Had a great lunch and caught a small marlin. Always good to have my senseis on board. My Dad and Uncle Jerry sure taught me a lot. Next biggest ahi was 20 pounds so if we could have caught it 15 min sooner it would have been 1st in the ahi division Good sashimi anyway.

Urbano Perez back to fish Kona again this year. With the Tropical Storm looming we started every morning wondering if the weather would get bad. Thankfully it was beautiful. Went 1-2 on blues and 1-3 on spears and caught a couple Ono. Urbano fished Madeira with us during the crazy bite we had there. I remember like yesterday that he caught some of the first big fish we caught that season catching a 550 and an 850 on one of 2days. As we said good bye he said “Well maybe we’ll get em next year. “ He and I laugh about that now realizing what a truly special time it was to be in Madeira expecting to have caught a grander in 2days of fishing. The truth is I expected that as well. We caught this blue in the final minutes of the day making it really exciting to finish up well. The feeling and excitement was nearly the same as when we fished together all that time ago. Nearly 30 years of friendship we owe to the special fishing we had together in Madeira that at the time didn’t really know what we had done. For me after all these years of fishing I appreciate everyone that comes to fish and recap the special days we had fishing all over the world more than ever now.
