November marked the return of the Koholā - the Humpback Whale. 🐋 The Humpback Whales have been a part of the islands' cultural tapestry for centuries. They are considered sacred creatures, closely associated with Kanaloa, the Hawaiian god of the ocean. The Hawaiians believed that these majestic marine mammals were the physical manifestation of Kanaloa's power, and their presence in the warm Hawaiian waters was seen as a blessing.

The return of Humpback Whales to Hawaii in November is a highly anticipated event that resonates deeply with both locals and visitors. It marks the beginning of a season where these incredible beings journey from their feeding grounds in colder waters to the Hawaiian archipelago for breeding and calving. It's a testament to the delicate balance of nature and the enduring connection between the ocean and Hawaiian culture.

We're always so excited to spot whales when we're out on the ocean. Our cruises are not only educational but also deeply respectful of the whales and their significance in Hawaiian culture. Onboard, you'll have the chance to learn about the cultural importance of the Humpback Whales, their behaviors, and their role in the marine ecosystem from knowledgeable guides.

"The mega coral - which is a collection of many connected, tiny creatures that together form one organism rather than a reef - could be more than 300 years old."

The coral could be 500 years old and is bigger than a blue whale, scientists say.

A new University of Hawai‘i study shows coral reefs have the potential to persist and adapt over time if carbon emissions are curbed and local stressors are addressed.

Researchers created 40 experimental systems that mimic the environment of a coral reef in the wild.

🌊 Meet Dante, one of our OG Captains at Fair Wind! 🌊

"I've been with Fair Wind Cruises for almost 19 years now. I started when I was 20, not really sure what direction my life would take. What began as something fun to try out has turned into a nearly two-decade adventure that's still just as exciting.

Over the years, what I enjoy most about being on the boat has changed. When I was younger, it was all about the adrenaline—the thrill of intense free diving and doing tricks off the high dive. Now, my favorite moments come from watching the joy and awe on kids' faces when they see the ocean for the first time. I also love seeing someone who starts out afraid of the water transform into someone in awe of the ocean’s beauty, with all that fear melting away.

What I appreciate most about working for Fair Wind is the strong sense of ohana—we’re more than a team, we’re a family. We don’t just aim to get the job done; we aim to do it to the highest possible standard. Raising my three kids with the boats being such a big part of our lives has been a huge blessing, and getting to work alongside my daughter Anna has been the highlight of my career. Here’s to many more years ahead!"
