Jokes and inflatable dinosaurs aside: we do see wildlife with some regularity out here. Besides rabbits and kangaroo mice, the most common sightings include bighorn sheep, pronghorn antelope, and deer. The desert is also home to coyotes and cats like bobcat, ringtail cats and mountain lion - all of which are incredibly rare to see.

Rattler or gopher snake?

It's snake season in the desert. With warming temperatures we're having lots of sightings at the moment. Most of our snakes are harmless, and even rattle snakes rarely pose issues: they typically avoid humans and only strike when threatened or provoked. Their warning rattles provide ample opportunity for retreat, and bites are rarely fatal.

And: not every snake that looks like a rattle snake at first glance actually is one! Who knows how to tell apart a rattle snake from a harmless gopher?
