This is a nonprofit program of Kama’aina Kids, the steward of He’eia State Park on Kane’ohe Bay, Oahu. We are proud to serve our community by preserving and caring for He’eia State Park (aka Lae o Kealohi). And we are proud to offer safe, fun, sustainable, and educational kayak and snorkel rentals from the park’s amazing waterfront access. It’s all nonprofit, and proceeds directly fund He’eia Stat

e Park! We have been a certified sustainable tour operator of the Sustainable Tourism Association of Hawaii since 2014, and we do our best to educate, raise awareness, and operate sustainably so that the natural and cultural treasures we cherish so much will be preserved for future generations. The protected waters of the Kane’ohe Bay make it a perfect place for kayakers and snorkelers of all ages and experience levels. Your kayak and equipment will be set up right on the water’s edge, ready to go! And we give you a waterproof map of the bay along with a personalized briefing from expert staff to ensure you know everything you need to know for a safe, fun day on the bay. With the famous Kane’ohe Sandbar (aka Ahu o Laka), Coconut Island (aka Moku o Loe, aka Gilligan’s Island), ancient He’eia Fishpond next door, and countless unique patch reefs teeming with marine life and Oahu’s healthiest coral reefs, Kane’ohe Bay offers the best kayaking and snorkeling on Oahu. With a heavy heart, we announce that we are discontinuing our kayak and snorkel rental activities at He’eia State Park. Our last day of operation is this Saturday, March 23rd.

Recent legislation, Act 232, prohibits the rental of all recreational ocean-use equipment within 1000 feet of the shoreline of Kane’ohe Bay. Despite our preexisting lease of He’eia State Park and our eco-friendly approach to recreational activities, the DLNR has informed us that Kama’aina Kids is not exempt from this new law.

This legislation not only impacts our ability to sustain He’eia State Park but also prevents us from offering the same boating and ocean programs to our keiki that we have for years. We are deeply disappointed in this decision and the lack of consideration given to our stewardship of He’eia State Park.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone in our community who has supported us and enjoyed the park and bay over the years. He’eia State Park remains open to the public, and you are welcome to bring your own kayak or board to access the bay.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your understanding and support over the years. Aloha and mahalo nui.

To everybody who has ever come to He’eia State Park to go kayaking and enjoy the bay, we can’t say thank you enough for supporting Kama’aina Kids! This is what it’s all about and this is what your kayak rentals have helped to make possible: kids getting to go to the sandbar, learn ocean safety, learn Hawaiian culture and ecology, and be stoked on it! Mahalo!

Ever wonder what it takes to care for a state park? It takes a lot! Especially when that park is both tropical and right on the ocean! Worth the read, we promise!

Let’s see… there’s constant tree trimming, grass cutting, landscaping, invasive species removal, pest control, repair and maintenance of facilities, including plumbing, electrical, and HVAC, septic tank pumping, waste removal, repair and maintenance of pavement and fence line as the ocean slowly tries to reclaim the whole place, shore line cleanup and maintenance, utilities, security, development and production of educational and promotional materials, an endless amount of supplies to order… sheesh! The list goes on and on.

Oh, and that doesn’t include the staff. Or the vehicles. Or insurance. Or the major renovations we’ve done. AND we pay rent to the State of Hawai’i on top of all that. All to proudly call ourselves the stewards of He’eia State Park and offer great environmental and cultural education programs for local kids.

And you know what makes all of that possible for this nonprofit organization? You! Just by going kayaking! What a great concept, right?! Mahalo to all who have supported it! 🙏🏻

It’s throwback Thursday and we’re feeling nostalgic.

We’re proud of the educational programs we’ve been able to host at He’eia State Park over the years. Most especially, we’re proud of the many programs that have gotten local kids out on the water, taught boating and ocean safety, and taught how to respect and preserve this beautiful ocean ecosystem.

When you rent a kayak from us, the proceeds not only fund He’eia State Park, but your kayak rental supports our youth programs by enabling us to have the staff, equipment, and venue with which to operate.

We think that’s a good thing. Who wouldn’t? And we are grateful for your support. Please like, share, comment, and otherwise help us spread the word! Mahalo!

‘Tis the season for wintery kayak adventures in Hawaii! From our ohana to yours, everybody have a safe, fun, holiday season and especially be safe on the water this time of year.

Lucky for us Kane’ohe Bay is always very flat and protected from ocean swell conditions, so those high surf advisories don’t bother us! But it can get rough out there when the wind gets too strong. Everywhere is different, know before you go!

Call us any time for updates on the conditions, and we’ll go kayaking and snorkeling as long as it’s safe and reasonable.

We hate to cancel, but everybody’s safety is our top priority.

When the weather and ocean conditions start getting rough we rely on standardized criteria from decades of experience and industry standards to determine when it becomes potentially unsafe or unreasonable to send people kayaking in the ocean.

Certain conditions affect us on Kane’ohe Bay specifically while others don’t necessarily. We will operate rain or shine as long as the conditions meet our criteria for being safe and reasonable.

Sometimes it’s a very tough decision. We don’t want to disappoint, but we do err on the side of caution when it comes to safety.

We appreciate your understanding. Your safety and the quality of your experience are important to us! Mahalo!

Our Story

We are located at He’eia State Park, right on the water’s edge of Kane’ohe Bay. Kane’ohe Bay is home to Oahu's only barrier reef, which makes this bay the calmest, safest, best place for kayaking and snorkeling anywhere on Oahu. It also contains the healthiest coral reef that you’ll find anywhere on Oahu, along with an abundance of marine life, countless unique patch reefs, and the world famous “Sunken Island” sandbar.

Enjoy a guided eco-tour with our friendly staff of certified, professional instructors. Or choose your own adventure with a self-guided package. We’ll tell you everything you need to know for a safe, fun day on the bay. Experience the magnificence of Kane’ohe Bay's pristine waters and diverse sea life with the bay's only kayak eco-tour. The protected waters of the Kane’ohe Bay make it a perfect place for paddlers of all ages and experience levels.

We are a nonprofit program of Kama’aina Kids, a local, nonprofit childcare organization that manages He’eia State Park. This eco-adventure program for all ages is the primary source of funding for Kama’aina Kids to be able to provide for this beautiful state park so that it can be a valuable community resource for generations to come.

We are a certified sustainable tour operator of the Hawaii Ecotourism Association. And we are committed to low-impact, responsible, sustainable activities for ocean and wildlife lovers of all ages. We try to leave the bay a little better than we found it each day, minimize our negative impact, and spread the message of conservation and preservation through education and awareness raising.
