Andy Smith in the flannel shirt holding the golf club on left. Grew up in Westport went to Penn School and Lincoln High School. He was an international golfer and a personal body guard for Boxing Heavyweight Champion Joe Louis, whenever he was in Kansas City. Most people knew him as a police officer, one of the oldest living before he passed. He is pictured here the Heart of America Golf Club, among its members or those who made history integrating Swope Park Memorial Golf Course in the early 1950’s

After slavery Pate’s Addition to Westport was set aside for the Freedman. Two black families with the last name of Smith migrated from both Richmond Missouri and Richmond Kentucky to what became known as Steptoe. The blacks in Steptoe just referred to their hamlet as Westport. There in Westport there was St. Luke’s AME Church and St. James Baptist Church and Penn School.
