Belger-Wichita recently assisted a Dodge City-based roofing company with a high-flying project. Belger was tasked with lifting various materials and equipment over 200 feet to the roof of the ATT building in downtown Wichita.

The 13,000-pound Jekko SPX650 mini crane used for the project was carefully lifted so the roofing company could complete repairs over the next several months. After the roofing repairs are completed, Belger will return to remove it from the roof. Also hoisted were a hot asphalt trailer along with assorted construction materials and tools.

The Belger crew used a Link-Belt 250-ton hydraulic truck crane utilizing 223 feet of boom in addition to 17 feet of jib at a 20-degree offset to complete the delicate lift. The roofing company is a regular Belger customer, but this is their first job in the Wichita area.

Many thanks to our customer for calling on Belger. A big shout out to the Belger-Wichita crew for their work on this job: Project manager Cary Cornfield, foreman Bryan Payne, rigger Michael Dosch, and heavy haulers Jerrit Moore and John Parker.

Yesterday Belger-Wichita deinstalled an iconic, 47-foot-tall mobile by Alexander Calder that’s hung in the Ruffin Building in downtown Wichita for almost 50 years. Belger partnered with Trinity Sales & Rental who provided the special lift equipment needed for the job. An airplane from the Kansas Aviation Museum will be installed in place of the Calder mobile and Belger-Wichita will do the heavy lifting on this part of the project, too. Link-Belt Cranes organized CraneFest 2024 at their world headquarters in Lexington, KY last month. Representatives of the company's dealer network, rental houses and end users were in attendance to learn about Link-Belt's 150-year history, manufacturing capabilities, and crane line up.

Belger’s new Link-Belt 110-ton hydraulic truck crane was one of the cranes on display. Many thanks to Belger-Wichita heavy hauler Clint Short and mechanic Justin Hinch (in 3rd image) for getting the crane ready to look its Belger-best, and to oiler Michael Kane and operations manager Jason Minden for driving the crane from Wichita to Lexington, KY and back.

Belger has primarily used Link-Belt equipment since the late 1960s.

FROM THE BELGER ARCHIVES
In the 1960s Belger-Wichita disassembled and transported the Country Acres water tower. This photo shows the MC 550A 50-ton capacity Lorain crane in action. The top section of the tower alone measured 16 feet in height and 26 feet in diameter.

In addition to water supply projects, Belger has over a century of experience serving a range of industries including aerospace, defense, energy, healthcare, manufacturing, and other utilities. With hoisting capacities of 22 to 440 tons, Belger cranes are available to handle simple to complex tasks. For more information, please visit www.Belger.net.

The Belger-Wichita division is currently assisting with upgrades to the Marion Reservoir dam.

Located in central Kansas and completed in 1968, the Marion Reservoir encompasses 6,200 acres of water surrounded by another 6,000 acres of public lands.

Belger’s Link-Belt 70-ton hydraulic truck crane was utilized for the first phase of the project that involved setting nine stoplogs in front of one of the dam’s gates to relieve water pressure (pictured here).

Currently Belger’s Link-Belt 150-ton rough-terrain crane is hoisting concrete materials and additional items used in the repair of existing dam gates. This stage of the project will take several months. Once completed, Belger will pack it up until next spring, when our crews will start on the next gate of the dam.

Congratulations to the following Belger-Wichita crewmembers on their coordination of the multiple aspects of the project and their hard work: Project manager Cary Cornfield, foreman Bo Taylor, driver Mo Thompson, oiler Michael Kane, and operators Jason Summers, and Spencer Holland.

Many thanks to our customer for contacting Belger on this long-term project.

Meet Belger-Oklahoma City Division Manager Barry Geheb.
Barry is responsible for overseeing and directing division operations. He works in conjunction with dispatch, maintenance, and sales and provides oversight, evaluation, and improvement of the efficiency of all aspects of the division.

When he’s not at Belger he’s part of what he calls a “softball family,” that includes his wife of 19 years and two daughters (a freshman and a sixth grader). Both daughters play softball at a high level and he and his family follow them across the country to watch them compete. The family also has four dogs.

Barry’s favorite part about working at Belger is the daily variety of activity. “No two days are the same” according to Barry. Another favorite aspect of the job is the people with whom he works. He credits them with “making this place special.” He adds, “we have the best crew--both field and office--in Oklahoma City and I am proud to be a part of it.” Barry’s been with Belger since the beginning of the year and we’re glad to have him on board.

It's and we're sharing a post by KC Yesterday of a 1965 job that involved Belger moving a decommissioned airplane from storage to 43rd and Main Streets in Kansas City, MO (see first image). It became a popular cocktail lounge known for its aviation-themed decor that closed about a year after it opened. The Flight 42 Cocktail Lounge had a short but memorable life.

This year is Belger's 105th year in business and we thank KC Yesterday for sharing information and photos about one of our projects. Please click on link provided in post below for more details and images.

Handling heavy machinery is stock in trade for Belger Cartage. Recently, Belger-Wichita moved three large gantry mills from Wichita to Kansas City. The metal monsters were difficult to extract from their location in Wichita, requiring the removal of doors and the re-positioning of other equipment in the plant. In addition, the machines were extremely heavy; with one weighing in at 90,000 pounds and the other two at 76,000 pounds each. Belger team members used a 6080 Versalift forklift and two F30 forklifts in the operation.

The machines were loaded on Belger trucks and transported to the Kansas City area, where they were unloaded and put in place at the customer’s facility. Foremen Joe Cupich and Brian Payne were assisted by drivers Mike Appleman, Ricky Livingston and Delmar Thompson from Belger-Wichita and Heavy Haulers William Byers IV and Jeff Stiffler along with Mechanic Brian Detel from Belger-Kansas City. Belger-Wichita Project Manager provided these images.

Congratulations to Belger's Wichita and Kansas City crews on a job well-done, and many thanks to our customer for calling on Belger.

April 27 is International Sculpture Day and we couldn’t think of a better time to share about a recent project.

Belger-Lenexa recently assisted in the removal of a sculpture for rehabilitation. “The Architect’s Handkerchief,” a large sculpture located at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art was in need of restoration and Belger was asked to remove and deliver it to a local Kansas City metal conservation firm. The sculpture, constructed by Swedish-sculptor Claes Oldenburg and his wife, Coosje van Bruggen needed careful handling and Belger was up to the task of removing the 2000-pound artwork from its pedestal and transporting it to the metal conservation company.
Handled by Belger’s TC650 Manitex Hydraulic Crane, operated by Dylan Cruz with the assistance of riggers Mike Smith and Gary Chiasson, the structure was loaded onto a lowboy truck handled by drivers William Byers and Justin Stiffler. Project Manager was Paul Schultz, who also took this photo. After the restoration is complete, Belger will be delivering and assembling the sculpture back to its home at the Museum.
Congratulations to the Belger crew on the successful completion of this project and many thanks to our customer for calling on us over the years.

Belger is known for more than hoisting loads to rooftops. The Belger-Wichita division was recently tasked by a long-time customer with off-loading a conveyor system for a cheese plant in Western Kansas.
The project involved rigging a gantry crane system for moving and then assembling 3 sections of the machinery inside the facility. Each section was offloaded from trucks and moved into the building using the gantry system. Once inside, the sections were stacked and maneuvered into place for final assembly by plant employees.
The unusual 10-day project was bolstered by the solid experience of Belger employees. The Belger team included:
Crane operator John Ikeda, drivers Mike Appleman, Carl Gandy, John Parker, Delmar Thompson, field operations supervisor Jason Minden, ironworker foreman Bo Taylor, ironworkers Kurt Farha, Star Osborne, and Pete Ruble, and sales manager Marilyn Suter.
Many thanks to our customer with whom we look forward to working well into the future.
